This one is my first post with a poll I think

I don't need a Switch 2, and I don't need this game. Simple as that.

Well since NIntendo acknowledge that NPCs are additional to the main roster, they pretty much don't really hide themselves about the contents here. There are some changes in World base roster, but not in obvious ways or not actaully giving any vibe of improvement from Wii which was from almost two decades ago, sorry to say I don't think this is acceptible at all.

In Nintendo's perspective, I guess there are two reasons behind: one is Tour and MK8's BCP weren't too far from now, and this leaves no time for them to produce much more contents for next game. The other is it's the landmark of NS2 debut game so they want to save efforts for other upcoming projects.

Aside from the price argument, I think a simple base game is okay entirely depends on whether Nintendo could reveal BCP plan from the start, just like Sonic's Crossworlds. If they do confirm that major contents are going to be added by phases, fans wouldn't be too bothered by a simple base. But at this point, either people are losing hope for this brand or they'd only consider buying it after BCP revealed.

There probably aren't additions to the base roster because there hasn't been a new major character since like 2000

Rosalina debuted in 2007, and Pauline was upgraded to major status ever since Mario Tennis Aces

And Bowser Jr. has been a mainstay since 2002

my take on that is they should start letting more characters onto the rosters so they can have an extended presence in some form in the series rather than letting the vast majority of interesting new characters remain one-offs and lost to time. There hasn't been a shortage of interesting new characters in the series, just a shortage of ones Nintendo has any interest in allowing out of one-off (or single-subseries-exclusive) hell. A mindset I've always been, and always will be, critical of.

I always thought that Captain Syrup would be an easy choice for the Mario Kart roster. Tatanga might be more unconventional, but he's from the same game as Daisy and there are even references to Super Mario Land in World, so it'd make sense for him to appear. For villains though, it's shocking that Wart hasn't shown up yet. He's the first non-Bowser villain and from the same game as Birdo and Shy Guy, seems obvious for him to be a playable character. There's no shortage of potential new characters, and that's before really digging into the spin-offs, which Nintendo is severely opposed to doing for some reason. I know I would love to play as Mona from Wario Ware in Mario Kart.

I mean, I think Nintendo is more likely to add Spongebob, Minecraft Steve, etc. to their kart racer before touching the deeper cuts, Sega did it in Crossworlds before they added any deep cut Sonic characters like Sally Acorn. And honestly, as someone who isn't even that deep into Sonic, I'd prefer the likes of Spongebob over Sally Acorn.

It's not even a Nintendo thing, it's mostly because Mario is a mass media franchise with an unfathomable reach that the corporation would prefer the likes of big media crossovers to win nonMario audience members to play their game than pander to people who would already buy Mario Kart even if *niche Mario spin-off character* wasn't in it. I know for a fact that if General Winter from Company of Heroes wasn't playable in Transformed, I wouldn't even try it, same with Link being in Soul Calibur II, and Nintendo and all other big companies know this.

I mean I barely know who she is other than she appeared in some old Sonic cartoon. 🤷‍♂️

I have yet to play the game, but I'm already rather disappointed that you can no longer use the Control Pad to steer your vehicle. That's not good if your controller's Control Stick suffers from drifting issues.

I believe it's got a ton of references. I can effortlessly state that Nintendo should NOT be trying to turn your Switch into a Switch 2 by updating your Switch to have Switch 2 Miis, Switch 2 pfps and Switch 2 news and eShop. Also I don't like the Mushroom Cup. The new approach Nintendo is making for Mario Kart World is... well, a change to the art style for WHATEVER THIS IS!View attachment mario-kart-world-rewind-3.webp

It is kind of decently good though.

I think it's hard to judge SEGA at this point given they don't have too many spinoffs recently, and Crossworlds actually has done much better than Team roster just with the base.

I agree niche characters are better not expected in any case, however, the difference is SEGA does embrance their modern mainline with new era characters, meanwhile the current MK World base main roster doesn't introduce any new driver that came from modern mainline. It's ironic cause Mario mainline have made more impact than Sonic. Sonic arguably wins over Mario in the base part.

Guests may also likely happen in Mario's DLCs as well so we can only wait until DLC news.

Rosalina debuted in 2007, and Pauline was upgraded to major status ever since Mario Tennis Aces

Well we're in 2025 so not having more new contents after 2007 is awkward, basically why I said in my post above.

Technically we should also count Nabbit who is supposed to be considered a main driver here. Just he isn't new to World and he is from WiiU era.

I mean, as someone who isn't a Sonic fan, yeah. But I also don't think a Sonic-centric racing game should prioritize appealing to me over hardcore Sonic fans. Sure adding a character I like from a different franchise might pique my interest but I think every series should appeal to its own fanbase first and foremost, unless it's a crossover franchise to begin with, or a spinoff that was conceptualized as a crossover.

For example I'd love a Mario & SpongeBob crossover game, but that doesn't mean SpongeBob is an ideal pick for Mario Kart over any Mario character no matter how niche.
