Any love for the Mario Land games?

Honestly I think the Mario Land games are pretty underrated, they added a lot to this franchise and I feel like they don't get spoken about nearly enough.

The overworld song from SML2 is such a nostalgic song to me! I'm too young to have played these games when they came out, but I still grew up playing them on my old GBA SP.

While I love the 2 Athletic theme and SML2 for a different reason (my past of liking a certain creepypasta titled GB), the most I've played of them is Levelhead remakes of 1's, and the music and stages are great. The Superball and other similar things wouldn't exist without it, and I think this was the first time Mario used a sub, IIRC?

It's also the first time he's flown a plane too I think... but don't quote me on that

super mario land is pretty meh tbh. like yeah i do get the whole 'it was literally a launch title for the game boy' and all that jazz but that doesn't mean i can't feel that it's aged

now mario land 2? dang. that's crazy what they could do on the game boy.

You are right, the first game hasn't aged extremely well but I think it's still got a level of weird charm to it, plus it's got a really good soundtrack

I like the ideals for both games putting Mario in a *ahem* land where everything is new and not the same old enemies and settings from the Super Mario games. These days it's impossible to separate Mario from the elements from Super Mario Bros., as with providing a new set of characters for him to interact with because it's a requirement, nay, an expectation that Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser, etc. must be in any game going forward. In any other context, we might never have gotten fan favourites Daisy and Wario, so they are quite noteworthy to me.

With that said, Super Mario Land 3 is funny, because story-wise, this game is basically Wario hijacking Mario's game. Basically Peach's statue is missing and Mario is searching for it, which basically implies that the story could've starred Mario if it weren't for Wario.

Thank you for reading.

It's definitely more "out there" than other Mario games, but that's part of its charm. There's something about that simple, quirky design and catchy soundtrack that hits just right. It's short, weirdly different from the usual Mario games (like fighting aliens?), and yet totally charming.
