JUDGE SESSION #2
Ninja Squid could not make it for the Judge Session today. So we quickly found a decent replacement...

8cda668a0767b13944b98b4a1a70a3be.gif

HEHEHE! What do we got here?! It's time for a brand new Judge session, folks! So grab your snacks, and let ol' King Dedede lay down the royal rulings.

Now hold on to your hats, folks, cause this time we're shaking things up! Normally, we'd be sitting pretty, pointing out who's the big cheese of the bunch. You know, the real showstopper from their side o' the tracks. BUT! After looking through all the wild 'n' wacky cases that stomped into the Court Room this week, we noticed something different… real different! Turns out, it ain't just who's shiny on the outside, it's all the arguments, the chatter, the drama! Whatever it is, the debate's been heating up hotter than my royal hot tub! And that, my loyal audience, is what made these characters really stand out this time around!

Remember when I said I'd be back with greater numbers? Well I brought 200,000 clone troopers with a million more well on the way. Regardless of where you stand on Star Wars being sci-fi, the clone troopers definitely fall into that area of exploring the impacts of this technology... and I'm not really talking about the prequel films where they mostly just exist to be proto-stormtroopers and then suddenly turn evil at the end (who could've seen that coming?). I'm talking about Star Wars: The Clone Wars and subsequent media, where we really get a chance to get in the heads of these guys.

There's quite a bit that goes on in there! After all, creating new people that age twice as fast for the specific purpose of being soldiers has a lot of implications, and ethical concerns (of course, given their creation was ultimately orchestrated by Palpatine, the ethics were probably never a consideration there). The clones at first see themselves as just that, expendable soldiers, with their Jedi generals encouraging them to see themselves as unique individuals. One in particular, however, takes an actively hostile view of the clones and throws them into the metaphorical woodchipper. The clones are encouraged to be free thinkers, and some of them sure do that - one of them chooses to desert and start a family, while another grows disillusioned with their treatment and sells valuable information to the Separatists. We see them question what their place will be after the war is over, and we see young Boba Fett come to grips with going against soldiers who look exactly like his deceased father. And, of course, we get the lore behind the inhibitor chips that will eventually force them to turn on their Jedi commanders, revealing that they never had quite as much freewill as everyone thought, and by the end of the series, we see long-established characters do just that - and have to come to term with their actions afterward.
Void Termina (Star Allies): The final world in Star Allies involves Kirby traveling throughout deep space to confront Void Termina. It's pretty massive before you can get to the core but the entire arena is a giant space battle, with black holes and galaxies afoot.

AHEM! Now folks, let's get this next part rolling, and we're starting off strong with the troopers! And not just one, not two, but TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND OF 'EM! That's right, you heard me! And before anyone asks: No, I don't know how we fit that many in the Court Room either! Maybe we folded space… or maybe someone's been playing fast and loose with the fire code, HEHEHE!

But the point ain't about how many booted feet we got marching around, it's about what they represent. Y'see, behind all that armor and clanking metal, there's a bigger picture: technology. Oh yeah, the fancy tools, the gadgets, the gizmos. Tstuff that's helping us grow, doing things faster, better, weirder. But at what cost, huh? We're talking about using technology to make new people, just to toss 'em onto the battlefield. That's not just a story, that's an ethical firecracker! It gets you thinking, when do we stop and say, Hey, maybe we oughta think about what we're doing with all this tech? Cause right now, we're seeing it zip into every part o' life, jobs, homes, even our chili cook-offs! And as it grows, it brings a big ol' question mark with it: What's next? That's the kinda heavy-duty stuff that makes this a standout case!

NOW THEN, let's fly a li'l higher, shall we? Enter: VOID TERMINA! The big spooky from the deepest part of the cosmos! And lemme tell ya, when Kirby took off into deep space to deal with this galactic nightmare, it wasn't just for kicks. Nah, it opens up a mighty fine debate about our place in the universe. We're one tiny star in a galaxy of who-knows-how-many planets, suns, black holes (don't fall in!), and who knows what else lurkin' out there in the dark! Void Termina stirs up them deep thoughts, Are we alone? Is there something out there watching us? Do they also eat Maxim Tomatoes? It's spooky, it's exciting, and it's just the kinda big idea that gets people talking. Like, really talking. Not just about monsters and meteors, but about life itself and what it means to be floating on this tiny blue puffball.

So what ties all this together? The troopers, Void Termina, the future, the stars? One word, y'all: SCIENCE! Big, booming, brain-blasting science! Whether it's marching metal men or star-born horrors, both these cases crack open the door to big questions about where we're going and how we get there. And that's what makes 'em the big shots o' the week!

Yep, I'll be focusing on THE AI character, HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. A full breakdown on his character and what I take from it will have to wait, but for now I wanna focus on just how much of an impact HAL has had!

WELL, WELL, WELL, look who rolled their red eye into the Court Room! It's none other than our old pal HAL 9000! That's right, folks! The smooth-talking, cold-thinking, button-pressing artificial intelligence that made space travel just a li'l more stressful, HEHEHE!

Now, let's not kid ourselves, we all know AI's a hot topic these days. Hotter than a Warp Pipe on a summer day! And ooooh, is it controversial! And what do we love here in the 'Shroomfest Court Room? That's right, controversy! Toss it in the soup, give it a stir, get a tasty beverage from it, and watch the debates fly! BUT! Let me make one thing crystal clear before we go any further, AI is NOT art! I don't care how many pixels it smooshes together or how many brushstrokes it pretends to make. It ain't art if it don't have a soul, got it? You won't see some of 'em flying around in my CASTLE!

Still, we gotta tip the crown to HAL 9000 for his cultural clout! This fella didn't just mess with astronauts, he messed with our brains! Pop culture? He's all over it! Just look at TEC-XX from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, ya don't need a royal detective to see HAL's influence all over that love-and-Peach-seeking computer!

And get this, our digital menace made it all the way to lucky number 13 on the AFI's list of the top 50 villains in film history! THIRTEEN, folks! That's spooky! Especially when you're chilling with the likes of Darth Vader and the Wicked Witch! AND, if you ever take a royal road trip to Pennsylvania, swing by the Robot Hall of Fame. Yep, HAL's right there, staring ya down with that red eye like he knows your search history. He's rubbing elbows with all the other robo-celebrities. Truly a digital dignitary!

Link, my boy! - Now let's see here… what's this scribbly note sitting on the judge desk? Ah, one from Ninja Squid. Always sneaking around leaving paperwork while I'm trying to nap. Looks like we got a list of other folks worth keeping an eye on… Dimitri, Chrom, Diamant, Lanz... Uh oh! Maybe it's best I don't say too much or I'll get a katana to the shins!

Ohhh, Link, buddy! You still breathing after last time? HEHEHE! How 'bout we settle things proper with a game of Smash later on? I'll show ya what real hammer justice looks like!

I present: Vez'nan!

IMG_0518.jpeg

"All magic comes with a price."

Vez'nan is the main antagonist of the Kingdom Rush franchise, the best Tower Defense series as of today! He is a dark wizard who has an evil army of goblins, orcs, dark knights, demons, etc. and resides in his tower. Plus he's purple, my favorite color!

But did you know he wasn't always evil, per se? It isn't just Sci-Fi that has origins of villains. Speaking of Origins

I'm going to go over this guy based on the timeline of the games. That means Kingdom Rush: Origins is the starting point of my summary! During the events of the game, Vez'nan was sided with the good guys (the Elves) and joined them on their battle against the evil Gnolls, Twilight Elves (and their Queen Malicia) as well as one of the spider queens, Mactans. During this adventure, he fought alongside what would be the future king of the Kingdom of Linirea (Denas, known as Prince Denas at the time). After the defeat of the Spider Goddess (the result of Malicia and Mactans fused together via the Tear of Elynie, a magical artifact), the Elves realized that the two villains corrupted the Tear of Elynie, the artifact provided by the goddess of the Elves herself, Elynie. Because it's corrupted, the artifact is now dangerous and must be cast into the Rift of Cinders to destroy it for good. Vez'nan volunteers to perform the task!

Not to destroy it however…
IMG_0519.jpeg

…but to use it to his advantage. And thus, the evil wizard Vez'nan was born.

Many years later…

In the first Kingdom Rush game, Vez'nan is the main villain. After traveling through the Kingdom of Linirea, winter mountains and the dreaded realm of Valurdul, the good guys make it to Vez'nan's tower. There is no turning back - it's time to test their mettle! After a rousing battle, Vez'nan was killed, and the threat to the kingdom is over.

That is, until Lord Malagar picks up his staff and becomes the bad guy of Kingdom Rush: Frontiers! But he's not Vez'nan, so I'm skipping him.

Fast-forward to Kingdom Rush Vengeance! But Vez'nan is dead… right? Wrong!
IMG_0522.jpeg

After his "death", Vez'nan became imprisoned by one of the demon lords, Moloch. Because he has been sending demons to the kingdom, he must be stopped. After kicking his big rear end, Vez'nan's cage is destroyed, and he is nowhere to be seen… ooh!

IMG_0523.jpeg

Free from imprisonment, Vez'nan returns to the Kingdom of Linirea, hoping to relax in his hot tub. To his horror, he discovers that his tower has been turned into a museum and carnival!
IMG_0513.jpeg

It's time for revenge! Regathering his evil army (with new recruits too, like Twilight Elves and ghosts), Vez'nan journeys throughout the Kingdom of Linirea, conquering everything in his path. This includes the Dwarven Kingdom, the frozen north, and of course, Linirea itself. After breaking into King Denas's Castle, he banishes the poor king in a portal, causing him to disappear.
IMG_0498.jpeg

Thus, Vez'nan has finally ruled over everything!
IMG_0499.jpeg

Unfortunately for him, it turns out there's a bigger threat out there: The Unblinded Cult. That's for Kingdom Rush: Alliance.

One month after the events of Vengeance, the remainder of Linirea's forces ventured to the southern continent (the same one where the events of Origins took place) to look for their banished King. Vez'nan and his army arrive to inform them about a greater evil (The Unblinded Cult) that Denas failed to see, but the wizard himself was aware of. He then offers an alliance to stop the new threat and to find King Denas's, to which the good guys agree too. Sure, he took over your entire kingdom but that's water under the bridge now! Turns out there's guy has some pretty great negotiation skills.
IMG_0514.jpeg

The Alliance manages to rescue King Denas from the cult and stop the evil deity they worship - The Overseer. Awesome! Oh, and Vez'nan allows Denas become the King of Linirea again. That's very nice of him!
IMG_0516.jpeg

It's a happy ending! Well, not really. One word would describe this entire plot - Deception! With the cult dealt with and the Overseer petrified, Vez'nan retrieves the corrupted Tear of Elynie from his carcass (it was broken off of Vez'nan's staff after Lord Malagar was killed in Frontiers, and a cult member brought it to the Overseer), therefore regaining his true power. What a brilliant plan! What will happen next?! Find out in Kingdom Rush 6, whenever that releases.
IMG_0517.jpeg
So that's the story of Vez'nan. What are his powers though? Other than banishing people?

1746147309075.png

Ah, so this is an opportunity for me to speak up for myself and how I would represent Team Fantasy. Very well.

My name is Xiahou Ba. My name, 覇 (Ba), means to dominate or an overlord (guess my dad wanted me to be very macho...ha ha ha....) I'm the son of Xiahou Yuan from Wei; he's a very famous general who served under Lord Cao Cao during the Three Kingdoms era. He's known for his swift ambushes on enemies and was one of the Eight Tiger Generals. Now, I'm not as particularly well-known as the various key figures that are in the Dynasty Warriors series and the greater Romance of the Three Kingdoms. When people think Romance of the Three Kingdoms, they would think of Lord Cao Cao and his brutal, aggressive ambitions, the three brothers under the peach tree oath of Shu (Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei), and the turmoil of many people just suddenly dying in Wu that led to Sun Quan ruling it. The Battle of Red Cliffs is one of the most famous battles (that actually led to the formation of the Three Kingdoms and was Cao Cao's fall from grace), and I'm not even in it.

Unfortunately for me, I don't come into play until a bit later. What makes me a compelling character despite only appearing as a unique officer as late as Dynasty Warriors 7 and only the last book of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms is quite a bit of a tragic story. This is common for this era too, the Three Kingdoms era is one of the most violent in Chinese history and practically a lot of characters die early or had a lot of tragic things happen to them, or they engaged in very brutal things themselves.

1746149853125.png

Well...here goes nothing.

Very early on, Zhang Fei of Shu had kidnapped a relative of mine, Xiahouji, when she was a young girl. Now, this is practically typical stuff that happened in this era, kidnappings are quite common (we in Wei did kidnap Xu Shu's mother which forced him to defect to us), though Zhang Fei treated her terribly (I'm not in the mood to get into the details of it) but this comes into play a lot later.

1746149720177.png

Eventually, my beloved dad ended up getting killed by his primary rival Huang Zhong of Shu in the Battle of Mt. Dingjun. In history, one of my dad's other sons attempted to get revenge and ended up getting slain (he was 13) but in Dynasty Warriors 8, I show up here and this historical tidbit is referenced by me attempting to go after them in utter rage only to get stopped by Zhang He. I guess he must have known that I would have gotten killed like my historical brother's counterpart.

1746149896534.png

Once Cao Cao and Cao Pi died, Wei wasn't really left with a line of as capable rulers, and one of our main strategists, Sima Yi, got very fed up with it. After Zhuge Liang's death (famous strategist from Shu), he denounced the current ruler Cao Fang, who then retreated from politics and allowed Cao Shuang into power. Cao Shuang then had a series of blunders...aaaaaand long story short, he ended up getting executed, Sima Yi led a coup, and then there was a manhunt of people related to the Cao family, which included the Xiahou clan. Xiahou Xuan, one of my relatives, despite not being involved in Cao Shuang's mishaps, got executed, and this led to.....my defection from Wei to the very faction that killed my own dad, Shu.

1746149792186.png

Nobody liked me for this move. Guo Huai, my old major and someone who I dearly loved, thought it was a disgrace, and that my father would be rolling his grave. Guo Huai was about to kill me when I lost a fight against him, and then ended up getting killed. The Sima clan hunted me down as I tried to escape. Why did I defect to the people that killed me rather than anywhere else? Because of the earlier aforementioned of Zhang Fei kidnapping of Xiahouji. Without going into gritty details, I had ties to Shu because of that whole situation. I had to go there. The Simas would kill me next. In history, I've gotten so lost and crippled from that journey, I had to kill and eat my own horse, but in the games, Jiang Wei is the one who rescues me and fortunately Liu Shan welcomed me, despite people treating me with much suspicion and uneasiness because I'm their enemy from Wei.
So yeah, despite not being a major character in the story, there's still a lot of lore behind me, even if it's not all pretty. All of us warriors have....a lot of us going on despite our series looking like a mindless fantasy hack and slash where we just look like we're killing huge droves of enemies with ridiculous weapons, but it's also pretty captivating, don't you think? I like all of the lore behind us, and it's very interesting to see how Dynasty Warriors has adapted us into the game, how we changed, how we're alike, and it applies to all of us, not just me. If others were here, they can explain themselves in great detail, I'm sure of it.

The verdict: Gotta hand it to Team Sci-Fi. They really brought the brains and the bang this week! Three strong characters, each packing big ideas about science, space, and the future! That's some top-tier court work right there!

Beautiful aesthetics and scenic images, you say? Leave it to me!

I'd say my castle tour last month was a success, so why not do another one! This time I'm guiding you on one of my favorite locations - it's Equestria! It's a land of ponies, griffons, yaks, dragons and many other mythical creatures!
IMG_0615.jpeg

Quite a lot of places to check out right? If we were to look at all of them, we'd be here forever. That's why only several of the locations shown will be shown. Don't worry though, you can visit any of the ones we don't get to on your own time. Without further ado, let's get started!

IMG_0602.png

Our first stop is Ponyville! A (mostly) peaceful village where most of the mane characters inhabit! It's a town just bursting with good vibes and kind ponies.

IMG_0618.png

One of the more noteworthy parts of Ponyville are Sweet Apple Acres, a large apple (and pear) farm run my the Apple Family, consisting of Applejack, Apple Bloom, Big Macintosh and Granny Smith. Working hard each and every day, the Apples grow and sell their delicious apples and cider… yummy!

IMG_0619.png

Then there's the Carousel Boutique, run by the generosity mare herself, Rarity. If you need anything fashion-related, this is just the place you need!

IMG_0620.png

Another point of interest is Sugarcube Corner, AKA the best bakery ever! Run by Mr. and Mrs. Cake, they bake all kinds of delicious cakes, cupcakes, pastries, you name it! What's even more charming is to see their foals Pound and Pumpkin Cake… awwwww! The ever-excited Pinkie Pie lives and works in this very building with a bedroom of her own. Did you know she has a super-secret party planning room?
IMG_0614.png
IMG_0613.png

Ponyville also has a school, Princess Twilight Sparkle's castle, and many other sights, but we still have many more locations to get through!

Our next stop is the Royal city of Canterlot!
IMG_0605.png

No location in Equestria is more magical than Canterlot. You know why? Because Princesses Celestial and Luna rule Equestria from their very castle here! Sure there may be a few snobbish ponies due to their wealth and overall high status, but almost all of he folks here are just as kind and polite as they are in Ponyville. This is also the best place to learn, as the humongous library and advanced education provided ensure all ponies here are wise and know of grand magic. And who doesn't like donuts? There's a donut shop here too…

IMG_0604.png
IMG_0603.png

Do you crave the hustle and bustle of the city? Manehattan has just what you need!
IMG_0606.png

Cities are always fascinating because there's always something new right around the corner! So much excitement in one location… ahhh! So many sights to see, and so much to do!
IMG_0608.png
IMG_0607.png

For those who want the complete opposite atmosphere, check out Appleloosa!
IMG_0610.png

Just a nice, quiet town in the country. Many relatives of the Apple family live here, hence the name of the place! There's also rodeos, lassoing and other western activities to do here too! Yee-haw!

Here's Clousdale! The perfect place to fly in the sky and observe the spectacular sights.
IMG_0601.png

Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy used to live here before they moved to Ponyville. Only Pegasi can walk on clouds, so be very careful if you aren't one! Cloudsdale is also home to a weather factory where all the weather is made! Just make sure not to cause a ruckus like Rainbow Dash did…

Las Pegasus is the city that never sleeps! Endless fun is to be found here!
IMG_0616.png
IMG_0617.png

I LOVE amusement parks and arcade games! Unfortunately we can't stay here forever so let's move on too… The Crystal Empire!

IMG_0599.png

So beautiful! Located in the north, the Crystal Empire was hidden for 1,000 before the evil King Sombra returned to have his revenge. Thankfully he is a goner, and pure-hearted rulers reign instead - Twilight Sparkle's older brother Shining Armor and his wife Princess Cadence. They have an adorable Alicorn baby named Flurry Heart known to have wildly unpredictable powerful magic. Still adorable though!

IMG_0600.png

Everything is made of crystal, including the residents, well sometimes. That is one perk of living here!

Time to go further north to visit Yakyakistan!
IMG_0609.jpeg

Yakyakistan is composed of a small village home to yaks. Being super far north in Equestria, there's snow as far as the eye can see. That doesn't mean nobody should check it out! The yaks have interesting traditions, and Prince Rutherford does everything he can to support his people (er, yaks).

Phew! That was just only a few of the incredible locations in Equestria. I do have other beautiful Fantasy scenic images… ready?
IMG_0612.png

What a gorgeous sunset in Ponyville! The sun is at the perfect position to make everything in front of him look like silhouettes. Don't the Cutie Mark Crusaders look mysterious?

IMG_0591.jpeg

This is Sequestria! Technically it's found outside of Equestria. The hippogriffs had to reside here because of the Storm King, although they're seaponies and mermares underwater because of a magical pearl used by Queen Novo. There's beauty everywhere, even under the sea!

IMG_6038.jpeg

Hope Hollow, the town at the end of the rainbow! Such a colorful locale that had all of its color drained surprisingly. Thank goodness the Mane 6 restored it to its former glory!

IMG_6394.jpeg
IMG_6395.jpeg

Your desktop?! Yes! Nobody's safe from pixelated ponies when they run around your computer screen! They even have social interactions with each other… awesome!

And lastly, because it's Star Wars Day…
IMG_0167.gif
MLP Storm Trooper.gif

No matter how many Stormtroopers there are, they're No match for us!

THE SCI-FI
EMPIRE STRIKES

BACK:
After being defeated by the Villainous Sci-Fi Empire lead by Cosmic Lord Waluigi Time the Fantasy Resistance seemed to be in peril.

To make matters worse however, the feindish general Feathers Mcgraw of the Sci-Fi empire proposed a surprise attack on May 4th when the empire would be the strongest and the fantasy team would be weakest.

All appears to be lost but the great king sparks isnt willing to go down so easly thankfully an opportunity has presented itself and the fantasy team is ready to finish the fight once and for all.

ShroomfestWTSciFiWin.png
See what I told you all about striking back? We've got one more week before we settle this, let's bring Team Sci-Fi home to glorious victory!

So, aesthetics, huh? Well the great thing about sci-fi is that it's incredibly versatile for settings! You want more grounded, realistic environments? Sure, a snow-covered planet that looks suspiciously like Antarctica or a forest planet covered in very Earth-like trees will do just fine and no one will bat an eye. The original Star Wars trilogy has a lot of this, probably due to technological limitations at the time, but it says a lot that nobody really minds, right? It just works! Of course, if sci-fi was just realistic environments stretched across a whole planet, that wouldn't be very interesting, would it? There's plenty of fantastical environments in sci-fi media that are out-of-this-world, so to speak.

latest-1892878285.jpg

And here's one of my personal favorite Star Wars planets, Coruscant! Okay, maybe I just think the nighttime cityscape aesthetic is cool... but look at this and try to tell me it's not gorgeous. I guess I could've posted a daytime picture to get a better view of the planet proper, but Team Moonlight won that particular 'Shroomfest, so... It's a pretty good show of what you can accomplish in this aesthetic though, right? Something familiar, but with a twist on the architecture... and lots of hovercars! Oh, and did I mention that what you're seeing here is the top of thousands of levels built up from the planet's surface? The lowest ones are now abandoned and uninhabitable... creepy!

Coruscant_at_night.jpg

Speaking of familiar with a twist, how about the Pikmin series? The whole franchise takes place on a planet that used to be Earth with lots of familiar sights (just ignore all the weird new creatures that have sprung up after whatever apocalypse happened), but now you're playing as a bunch of tiny guys, making everyday things like batteries look gigantic! What can I say, I like the vibe of small characters making normal things look really big.

And it's not just about the outdoor environments. Sci-fi is well known for its interior aesthetics, whether that's bases or ships! Sleak, clean. Very nice. Some people may think that this aesthetic is too sterile, but check out this neat player-created base from Subnautica! Looks pretty homey, doesn't it?

s2tU7iV-1125392942.jpg

Vibes aren't just about what you can see, though, they're also about what you hear! And if we want to talk about iconic, let's talk about John Williams, quite possibly the most iconic film composer of all time. Many of those contributions are to sci-fi! What would the Star Wars saga be like without him and that iconic opening theme or Darth Vader's fearsome Imperial March? What about other sci-fi movies like Jurassic Park or E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial? He even did Superman, if you want to count that.

One more time - Go Team Sci-Fi! Don't forget you can vote one more time in the poll, too! May the Fourth be with you!

See what I told you all about striking back?
If this is following the Star Wars films that means Team Fantasy will win in the end. I rather like being on the winning team so I shall Endorse: Team Fantasy.
