Mario Kart World

Guys I found my new main

Some very peculiar newcomers that we've gotten. But if Ripper Roo can drive a car with just his feet, then what's stopping a Goomba?

Anyway, in terms of the game's retail price, we should probably keep in mind that video game development costs a lot of money, especially in today's society.

I will point out that NES games in the late 80s and 90s cost like $80-100+ when accounting for inflation. Games being $60 was a standard set when discs were introduced since they were less costly to produce but really the prices we're seeing now used to be pretty reasonable and I think we're undervaluing what goes into game development

I don't think this game cost that all that much to make to begin with.

I won't pretend I know how game dev budgets work, but this looks like an ambitious project, I don't think a single major asset here is reused. There's even retro tracks here that HAVE made recent appearances and yet they're still completely rebuilt from scratch. Plus the whole "you can seamlessly drive TO any of the tracks within an open world" thing. As far as Mario Karts go I can see this having the highest budget of the entire series, with only 8 (Wii U) possibly matching it due to the jump to HD.

I say this with the knowledge of knowing other racing games that have full voice acting, a full-featured single player mode, over 500 licensed cars to use (which are far more detailed and customizable themselves than the playable characters and the karts combined), and a fully open world with next gen 4k graphics with many objectives, still sold at 60 dollars by the way. I also say this with the knowledge that its competitor, Sonic Racing Crossworlds, is around equally as ambitious with a decently sized amount of playable characters with many vehicle types (like actual airplanes, hoverboards, boat racing), full voice acting, robust vehicle customization (we have yet to know the asking price of that game).

This is the reason I don't buy this asking price. I truly believe they priced this at 80 because they know Mario Kart is going to sell rather than to recoup budget that went into this, and they're going to get away with it.

Yeah but blof Sonic Racing Crossworlds doesn't have Cataquack in it so how much could it really be worth?

I'd also like to point out that Mario Kart 8 was $60 on its 2014 release. $60 in 2014 calculates to $81.50 today. This game is no more expensive than 8 was when it launched. On top of that it blows 8 out of the water in terms of content. Nintendo keeping their prices at 60 into the Switch era was actually a blessing because if they'd adjusted for inflation they'd have been 70 then.

This looks like an incredible masterpiece. I want it now. Look at their character selection, too! Absolutely off the wall. Free roam?! Epic. The tracks look awesome. Maybe not as many this time around, cause of the scale and free roam, but it looks like there won't be any misses so far.

Curious to see how those costumes work, also looking forward to battle mode news. So excited!

I'd honestly say it's both good and bad in multiple aspects.

Without Koopalings, we can tell they want to go with diverse species and I do appreciate they scout friendly species like Moo Moos and Penguins. Nintendo also clearly know many characters make spinoff player debut this time. And the species do represent a wide history of Mario games and that's appreciable.

But some of the cases are strange when we know the species do have more outstanding picks, such as Honey Queen and King Penguin. Another common arguemnt is not letting the popular veterans like Funky and Poochy return or just skip Tour/8DX to join this game, I know we need both cuts and newcomers, but it feels kinda a letdown when most of the newcomers are arguable not as popular as the cut veterans in indivdual, despite of the fun and freshness. If they want to replace Funky why not add KRool, who can make a very convincing replacement.

Overall I do love the fun and and nonsense, but "nonsense only" also feels like a type of lacking diversity. I think it would had been much better if few new drivers are the actually obvious or popular candidates alongside the silly nonsenses. For example, give us HoneyQueen&Penguin or Stingby&KingPenguin would be a better balance.

My other concern is whether the species have vivid animation like the main cast showed (since the initial trailer only focus on the main cast while the species are on the side.) I know the koopa subspecies have animation, but I don't really see that from Dolphin or Snowman. One theory could be that they're all in because they're recycled renders that don't require too much animation.

Bringing up inflation requires extra context to justify the price of this. For instance the counter argument floating around would be that while inflation has gone up worldwide, purchasing power has not. Wages have not kept up with it. So we're getting this discussion of the price of this game and no amount of Cow Cow in this is justifying that outrageous asking price of 80.

It has Denuvo playable!

I recently saw some recent gameplay footage, and here's what we should know about the vehicles...
  • Vehicle customization no longer exists.
  • Vehicle stats are limited to Speed, Acceleration, Weight, and Handling.
  • Vehicle stat ratings are out of 4, with 2/4 being average, but you can have decimal values.
No Koopalings?! Noooooooooooo! 😭
I actually heard from a user at SmashBoards state that the Koopalings were among the most hated newcomers in Mario Kart 8, which is quite heavy for a group of Koopas whom never had a playable appearance before that game. It's even more baffling that they got more hate than Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach, with the latter just being Peach with metallic shaders implemented.

If they were so hated then why did people choose Morton and not other characters of his weight class before the "balance" updates?

This is a pretty strong claim and I'd like to see any semblance of evidence backing that up.

This is what SmashBoards user, Opossum, stated to me...

I mean, besides the Kongs (who are probably gone because they're trying to solidify DK's redesign and that likely means deciding what to do with his supporting cast), there...really aren't very many omissions? Like again, besides the Kongs, the biggest missing characters from 8 Deluxe are Petey and Kamek, and the latter is an item now.

RPG characters and the extended Wario cast were never on the table, historically, so it's not like they're egregious omissions. So again, Kongs aside, they're missing...who? Petey, Kamek, and if you count Tour, then King Bob-Omb and Poochy? And the ever-missing E. Gadd? That's a small enough list to be covered in like one wave of DLC.

Hell, besides the above mentioned, most of the cuts from 8 Deluxe were of characters who were downright hated among the online fanbase. The metal variants, the power up variants, and the Koopalings seemed to draw the ire of half the fanbase.

Dry Bones is in the game. And again...the Koopalings were absolutely hated by most people online. I've seen more people happy about them being dropped than people sad that they're seemingly gone. So with those out of the way there are like...fewer than five characters who most people actually care about that didn't return. That's not a "middle finger," it's just the reality of any game with a big roster.

Maybe I'm overreacting to what he said, but it definitely felt like a heavy statement.

Seems like anecdote and overreliance on the word of people who spend time online, which are not the majority of the players who play Mario Kart. Jury is still out if the Koopalings are back, but Baby Rosalina still returned in spite of her online reputation being negative (that character also got an alternate outfit in Mario Kart Tour). I don't think Nintendo pays that much attention to what fans want. If the Koopalings are gone, it's not due to the apparent online reptuation. It'll be a shame, as with if Diddy Kong, Metal Mario/Pink Gold Peach, H. Queen, Paratroopa, Kamek, R.O.B., are indeed cut from the roster.

Anyway, on a different subject, for some notable information that I've gathered from today's videos, here's the stats for some of the vehicles when Mario is riding them...

First of all we need to do some cuts, at this point we've got the main cast return so it'd be illogical to expect much more MK8 drivers to return.

As I said above, species diversity is the major problem with the koopas. I'd agree rosters shouldn't always be just about human versus koopas.

But in terms of importance, it's also arguable to claim the World newcomers are wearker as all pure minions when Koopalings at least are generals with personalities. As I stated above, I feel like the World base newcomers don't garuntee a "overall better" quality for the cuts to be accepted.

Also I hate to say it, but Koopalings got no appearance in any other NS1 game, that's even much more disturbing. I'd happily accept if they're gonna star in tennis or party instead of kart on NS2.

much attention to what fans want

Most of the fandemands are characters that got spotlights from the mainline.

In NIntendo's view the obvious fandemand would sure help when they help the regular games' sales. (Like you even add the Talking Flower to Jamboree, why not let it drive?)

Piantas are the icon for Sunshine so that may be a pass, but it'd be super weird to skip Cappy and go for other Odyssey minions.

Also don't forget the movie. If they want to acknowledge "everyone can race" concept, having kongs race in the movie would be the anti-advetising there. Now the movie helped increase kongs demand for MK, Nintendo basically shot their own feet.

why isn't that fish bone crumbling, its not in water

I'm thinking Fred Roam will be more than just a Free Roam, but maybe with quests to unlock characters. And if I'm right, according to the Nintendo Treehouse footage, once you get a costume from the Food Bag, you unlock the costume as a separate character

I wonder if a lot of the unusual characters will be unlockable by exploring the open world and discovering secrets. Perhaps if you drive around Moo Moo meadows area, there's a hidden barn gate and driving through it unlocks the cow as a playable racer.
