MarioWiki Poll Discussion

this poll has made us realize that there literally aren't any official Mario Tower Defenses, which.
  • presently working on a pvz2 mod
  • my (cam) sona's a monkey expressly because of bloons monkey city (of ALL the bloons games somehow!!)
might be up our alleyway

A new identity for the Poll Committee!

The Super Mario Wiki stands out through three distinct venues that encourage engagement among the members of the community. Each of these venues shared a unique goal of creating entertainment for its users to come together and interact with one another.

The 'Shroom as its name suggests, comes from the Mushroom, one of the most iconic power-ups of the Mario franchise. The Awards Committee is represented by a Purple Star; purple due to the colour code of the Awards Committee here, and a Star, another classic power-up of the Mario franchise.

However, the Poll Committee was not as much represented by an iconic identity. For instance, The InterNed was used during the Poll Committee Chairperson Election and for our Google Forms. The current Poll Committee came to the conclusion to use an identity of its own and which completes the core power-up trio of the Mario franchise. We are happy to share with you the newest visual identity of the Poll Committee: The Poll Committee Flower!

The main feature of the PC Flower is in its outer ring. In order to evoke the very nature of the Poll Committee, a group of community members creating polls for the main page of the MarioWiki, the outer ring is based upon a pie chart. The inner ring of the flower is pink, which is the colour code of the Poll Committee banners and roles on the forum and Discord respectively. Overall, the design reflects the style of the 2D artworks of the Mario franchise in order to respect and being close as possible to the source material.

With this change, the three venues of the community are now fully represented by a Mushroom, a Flower, and a Star!

Credits where credits are due, special thanks goes to @Hooded Pitohui for pitching the idea in a Discord DM, which I eventually shared with the Poll Committee. Thank you to our Poll Committee Chairperson @Sparks, Vice-Chairperson @GoldGal64, and my fellow PC members (@Koopa, @Boo1268, @Dingodile, @Mike Wheeler, @Paper Plumm, @Princess Mint, and @Yoshi18) for your positive reception to the idea, as well as your involvement on the project in the way of inputs and/or feedback.

Hey everyone, I'm in charge of this new poll! It was an idea I originally submitted late the 12th Poll Committee. Being fairly well-received even with other proposals taking higher priority. So I decided to re-submit it when on the PC this term, to success.

I voted for Option 5, as I think that when a game has many different time limits in levels, it makes for an interesting variety. The Speedy Comets in Super Mario Galaxy 2 are an example of different limit types I remember enjoying. As for example, I liked how some of the comets add time clocks for you to pick up more time with almost none left, and some have a larger time limit that always ticks down. These two level types definitely have a different but very distinct for both, flavor of hurry. That the non-time clock Comets range from 2 to 5 minutes is also a nice touch, in giving many different flavors of urgency. Those are my preferences on when there are time limits, but on the other hand I don't mind when Mario levels let you explore at your own pace without a time limit too. I am curious to hear everyone else's thoughts on these time limit options!

When levels have time limits, which type of time limit do you like the most, if any?
-Longer, easier time limits which add a small challenge but still let me explore.
-Moderate time limits that add some challenge to the level.
-Very short time limits that add greater challenge to the level.
-Short, strict timed challenges that require you to pick up more time to complete the level.
-I tend to prefer when a Mario platformer has a variety of different styles of time limits in the game.
-I prefer to not have any time limits in a Mario platformer.
-I have no opinion on time limits in Mario platformers.

I'm choosing "Moderate time limits that add some challenge to the level." I like my game UI elements to actually have an effect, which conventional 500 second timers usually don't. Unless you're looking for secret exits and Star Coins, in which case the time limit kills you for not being good at pixel hunting. Which isn't the most fair considering many players have to take the "shuffle against every wall" approach to find these things. When you die to time for this, then the next time you just start the search from a later point in the level. So despite inflicting death, unlike most sources of death, it doesn't necessarily result in the player getting more skilled. I think modertate time limits that enforce deliberation in movement while leaving a lot of room for error is the best fit for the Mario franchise, as we've seen in New Super Luigi U and Super Mario Run. I'm going to highlight the latter here (Mostly because I haven't played New Super Luigi U in a while.) Super Mario Run courses generally have very comfortable time limits. It's rare to run out of time on a casual stroll, even when making mistakes along the way, and the collectables of the game are mostly clearly visible so the player usually doesn't have to pixel hunt. No, the trick is the main gate for chasing a high score is the timer. Going over each of the different routes of the level is a great way to get more coins, but the player has to be deliberate about which areas of the level they do choose to rerun lest the timer catch them right at the end. And so the challenge of plotting a route through the course that uses every last drop of the timer begins.

No shade against courses with abnormally short timers. They're just more effective when they're rare and startling than when they're the entire point of the game.

Well I interpreted the question as meaning, when there is a sort of time trial challenge, then I prefer it to be difficult. I did like the stars in SMG2 where you have to pick up clocks though.
