I dunno. The fact that Mario is Missing has the shell extend to the tail kind of ruins its credibility.

This is actually the point: if one of the less faithful sprites of Bowser ever made, which even features some pants that magically pop out of nothing, still has the belly plates separated from the rear shell, it means that this trait is almost untouchable.
