I have no idea so that is why I am asking you what you thing.
Personally I think the transition is long overdue especially seeing as Discs vs Cartriges was the sole reason why the PS1 beat the N64 in Gen 5.

However, because of size constraints, I suspect that they will use Mini-Discs like those of the GameCube rather than the big Discs as the Wii and Wii U and the PlayStation consoles use.

I'm guessing maybe Sony will transition first because that would repeat the history of Sony transitioning first in Consoles.

Sony already did. Play Station Portalable.

I thought that the PSP used Cartriges but you might be right since my memory of it is so faint since I've only seen anyone who owns it once and it was before the Playstation 3/Wii came out.

Sony already did. Discs would probably be too large for Nintendo's handhelds.

As other people said, the PSP can already play discs.

As for the transition, idk. Cartridges have their own advantages over discs.

Cartridges also load quicker than discs.

Discs present various inconvenients (carriability, load times...etc) for the handheld user experience and the PSP completely failed at making viable the ~home gaming on the go~-type experiences where the extra storage would theorically be necessary (not to mention UMD flopping as a format). Even if dedicated handhelds weren't going the way of the dinosaur, I just don't see it happening.
