How do you get opinions on games you have never played.

I personally watch video footage.

Watching video footage like lets plays have convinced me to get games several times. (And my GameCube Accessories)
 
I get them from video footage, articles, or whatever source of information is available. It's exactly how I knew Sticker Star was a disgrace before I even played it.
 
You can't form a complex opinion on a game you personally haven't experienced. It's usually as reliable as a first impression. Something like controls of the game you have to feel for yourself.

But for some games I haven't played (like Ride to Hell Retribution lawlz or some other godawful games), video footage helps a lot.
 
I base my purchases mostly around (non-commented) footage. User opinions are also a factor, but I'll ignore 'em if the game looks resonably interesting to me (got Lair and Gundam Crossfire despite a mixed at best reception and ended up loving both games).
 
My first impression usually comes from someone mentioning it. If it's a genre that I'm interested in, and it sounds like a good game, then I'll look into it further, often by checking with critics like Angry Joe, if possible. If I know any friends who've played it, that's even better because I can ask them what it is about the game that appeals to them and learn more about whether it seems like a game I would like.

Really, though, it's not possible to get a full idea of a game from someone else's opinions. You have to experience it for yourself. But you can get a first impression that is (usually) pretty helpful at deciding whether to get the game or not.

I usually hear about a game through the internet somehow before looking up gameplay on youtube or checking if there's a wiki of some sort that has information about it.

If I like what I see then I'll put in on the list of games that I think are interesting and possibly worth the money. If I really like what I see, I'll find out how much it costs to buy and buy it if it is cheap. If it is not, I'll wait a little while and watch some more gameplay until I'm completely sold on it.

I like to play a game before I judge it and I'm usually pretty lenient on a game as long as I get a minimum of 4 hours of fun from it.
 
I don't. I just complain about games I've never played just for the hell of it.

No, usually I do some research about it before I blab about my opinions, such as graphics, gameplay vids, a bit of the story, etc. If I haven't, then I won't give my opinion since I don't know enough information about said game in order to really have my own opinion about it.
 
I steal them from others in the dead of night!

If a game I hear about interests me, I'll research it a bit, gather others' opinions. If I like it enough, I'll buy it and form a proper opinion of it. If not, I'll probably watch a run of the game and form a weak opinion based off that and my prior research and opinion-farming.
 
First I ask either my friends or people I know to have similar tastes to mine about what they think of the game.

If that fails or provides insufficient information, I watch video footage of it.

Last I do something silly. I go to TVtropes and check if the game has any instances of womb levels, because I fuggin hate those things.

But really, most of the time what determines if I buy something is whether one or more of my friends are playing the same thing so we can talk about it, or if I already know what it's gonna be like. With the relatively limited amount of money I have, I can't really waste it on purchases I'm not sure I'm going to enjoy. Which I guess makes me a boring old fart.

Does that mean that you don't like going inside Jabu-Jabu's belly in OoT or Bowser's Inside Story? Actually, IDK if you ever played either of those.
