Not really. Just like you don't need to play SS to understand PiT.

I agree, I played PiT first before SS and I understood everything.

It's kinda like Megaman. They start you bare boned no matter what game you play and explain the game mechanics and all. It's like playing Mario 64 after Galaxy... no real difference...
