Well... This was a surprise.
Like, I don't even know where to begin... I supposed I should say I should begin with my mindset going into the livestream this morning. So I pretty much went in expecting Shulk because the director of
Xenoblade Chronicles as well as other members of Monolift Soft retweeted the announcement of a new character on Twitter. I was hoping for either Ridley or Krystal, but regardless, I was preparing myself for kind of an "eh" experience. I figured if Shulk wasn't going to be in the trailer, Chrom or maybe even the Chorus Men would be, since they were part of the Gematsu "leak", which up until now had been proven correct in all of it's predictions...
...I feel like this is qualified for the reveal trailer.
Not only is Chrom NOT going to be playable, but we're getting Robin/the player avatar from
Fire Emblem: Awakening AND Lucina as playable characters! AND THE TRAILER REVEALS CAPTAIN FALCON AS WELL! Like, I knew he was going to be in regardless, but I can't help but feel like, whoa, Sakurai was hearing everyone going "where's Captain Falcon?" and he had him in this trailer just to give "us" what we want!
I mean, on top of that, there are just so many unexpected things from this trailer! A veteran confirmed through a newcomer trailer is nothing new, Charizard was confirmed in Greninja's trailer, but TWO newcomers sharing the same trailer?! Not to mention, if we weren't going to get Chrom, I was expecting at least one new
Fire Emblem character from
Awakening, but we ended up getting Lucina AND Robin, two popular choice, getting confirmed at the same time! Like, holy cow... I'm at a loss for words...
Unfortunately, though, I think this also confirms that the Gematsu trailer was fake. Chrom isn't playable; instead he appears to be part of Robin's Final Smash. This means that the Gematsu "leak" really was just a mass of lucky guesses... or perhaps Chrom WAS meant to be playable early on, much like how Greninja didn't have a name when they started production of these games, hence why some people assumed the leaker said "Pokémon from
Pokémon X &
Y" instead of Greninja. This could mean that the other two the leaker said, Shulk and the Chorus Men, might not be in the game either, but you never know... IMO, I still want Shulk in the game, and I'd prefer Marshall (from
Rhythm Heaven Fever) to the Chorus Men as
Rhythm Heaven representatives. As for Chrom not being in... honestly, I like this much better. Nothing against Chrom, but I thought there was a lot more potential in a unique moveset to be had when it came to Robin, given how he uses swords AND tomes. I even kind of preferred Lucina a bit over Chrom, since I'd like more female characters, though I didn't think she'd be in, since I was expecting Chrom, or at the very least, Robin, and I didn't think we'd get two characters from
Fire Emblem: Awakening. So sorry to all you Chrom fans out there.
As for the trailer itself, I love how it's animated like how the cutscenes were in
Fire Emblem: Awakening, and I have to say, Captain Falcon looks freaking amazing in that style! His comic book-like style and appearance really shines through here! Also, when I saw Lucina and it said "Lucina Wakes her Blade?!", I was all like "WHAAAAT?!"... which I guess was the intended reaction... Geez, Sakurai really has his pulse on what the Smash Community expects... Then when a green slash appeared, I almost thought we were getting Shulk, since I'm not that familiar with
Xenoblade Chronicles, and for all I know, he could shoot razor wind like that. So imagine my surprise when it turns out the player avatar, Robin, was revealed to be playable! He's about as awesome as I'd expect, using his tomes along with this swords, which he seems to switch on the fly (interesting). The way they float around him is pretty cool! Also, Lucina looked pretty cool, too. The "Fire Emblem Melee" tun in the background was an awesome touch as well! ...The final nail in the coffin with Chrom saying he'll fight another day kind of felt like a kick in the teeth to whoever wanted him playable, but oh well...
So yeah, great reveal, had me excited the whole day! Kind of feel like it's going to go back to being slow after this, but them's the breaks I guess... except there's one thing I wanted to mention, when it came to the Pic of the Day before the reveal trailer...
...What the HELL is up with this?!
Before and after the trailer, this just raises so many questions... Did Sakurai think he could sneak this in and nobody would notice? Well, I noticed alright!
Apparently... Rayman, a third-party character, is going to be in the game... as a trophy. Not playable (from what I can tell). This... feels really awkward for so many reasons. I'll make a list of them.
1.) I always felt that
Super Smash Bros. should be all about Nintendo characters; the series is basically a celebration of everything Nintendo. Third-party characters are welcomed guests, but that's all they are, guests; they should never overshadow the main feature. This is why I'm against willy-nilly third party suggestions like Sora, Cloud Strife, Crash Bandicoot, etc., and it's also why I wasn't all that comfortable with Snake even though Hideo Kojima personally requested him. At lot of these characters aren't that closely associated with Nintendo. Even with the ones that actually appeared in games that were on Nintendo platforms, they don't seem to really fit well in
Super Smash Bros. Sonic is the mascot of Sega, a former rival of Nintendo, so having him be in the game feels like having our imagination as children in the 90's becoming a reality! The Mega Man games got their debut on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and were pretty much an essential part of an NES library of games, so it feels right to have him here to. As for Pac-Man, well, he's a literal video game icon, Bandai-Namco is co-developing this game, and he's Shigeru Miyamoto's favorite video game character, so I'd say he fits as well. Now, despite my ramblings, I actually wouldn't be opposed to seeing Rayman in
Super Smash Bros., but the thing about that is...
2.) Rayman doesn't appear to be playable, he's just going to appear as a trophy... which is really weird. Why bother gettting a third party character, just to have him as a mere collectable trophy? I mean, are we suddenly going to get a Simon Belmont trophy, even if Snake turns out not to appear in this game? Are we going to get a Bayonetta trophy as well just because? I wanted the trophy selection to better reflect Nintendo's history and the franchises of the playable characters, so dedicating a trophy to a character that isn't going to be playable, when no other Ubisoft games/characters are going to be in it (or are they?!) just feels like an absolute waste! I mean, it's be one thing if the
Rayman games were exclusive to Nintendo, much like
The Wonderful 101 and its trophies, but that leads to my third point...
3.) Rayman did not debut on a Nintendo console. A lot of
Rayman games that did eventually get released on consoles, with the exception of
Rayman 2: The Great Escape,
Rayman Origins, and maybe some others, were ports of older Rayman games and weren't very good ones at that. There WAS going to be
Rayman Legends, but that's kind of the point I was leading up to. It WAS going to be a Wii U exclusive... until Ubisoft brutally stabbed Nintendo in the back, and not only released the game on other consoles, but held off on releasing the Wii U game until the other versions were done, and now outright refuse to make or release anything on the Wii U! They even said they had a game that's actually complete but won't release it until Wii U sales improve! I could rant about Ubisoft's mindset about all of this, but the point I'm getting at is this:
Rayman's inclusion here as a collectable trophy is not only a bizarre choice, but an awkward in retrospect one at that! Here Sakurai was complimented how Ubisoft sent them a 3D render to work with instead of 2D references, when Ubisoft has been incredibly snippy when it comes to Nintendo and the Wii U. Not to mention, just getting a third party character that ISN'T playable, it just... doesn't feel right...
...Which is why I'm secretly hoping Rayman actually IS playable, and that his reveal trailer connects to the
Rhythm Heaven character, given recent Rayman's tendency for phat beats and moving to the rhythm, especially in
Rayman Legends. I was thinking it could open or end with that rhythmic snoring from
Rayman Origins, too! But I feel like this is unlikely... Revealing a third party character like this unceremoniously, and having him be immediately overshadowed by another hype-driven trailer, just makes me feel like a trophy is all Rayman's going to be here... which...
Ugh, whatever, that's all I got from today's pics and trailers... here's hoping the next big reveal doesn't have anything that leaves me conflicted beforehand.
