Here's one: A "Mario Brother" (twin, actually) appeared before Mario Bros. in Donkey Kong Jr. Two Marios hoist Donkey Kong's cage, then the one pulling it to the left disappears off the edge of the screen while the one pushing remains visible.
I don't know why no one ever considered this an early appearance of Luigi, though wearing the same colors as Mario.

Here are 40 facts that you might not know about Mario

Mario was depicted as bald in early Donkey Kong merchandise. Knew it.
Japan got a version of Excitebike that starred Mario. Knew it.
Supercade was the first Super Mario cartoon. Knew it.
Mario was considered for Sega All-Stars Racing. Semi-knew it. I knew SEGA was considering adding a Nintendo character, not specifically Mario.
Mario and Luigi are twins that were born in the Mushroom Kingdom. Depends on the continuity. In Yoshi's Island, for example, this would be true. But then you have games like Mario Bros., that espouse that Mario and Luigi are not twins and were born in Brooklyn.
The Warp Whistle in Super Mario 3 is from Legend of Zelda. Specifically, it is known as the Recorder there, but it has the same function, design, and music.
Kamek was almost in Mario Kart 64. Knew it.
Luigi's Mansion was once planned as a 3D game. Knew it.
Mario was once a bad guy. In Donkey Kong Jr., correct?
Nintendo trademarked "It's on like Donkey Kong". Knew it.
Nintendo cancelled a Mario volleyball game. Knew it.
Bowser's original name was King Koopa. How does someone not know it?
New Super Mario Bros Wii originally had a Scootaloo chicken power-up. First of all, that's not funny. Second, knew it
Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong. Knew it.
Super Mario Galaxy boss Major Burrows is voiced by the game's director. Knew it was voiced by someone from upper development. Close enough.
Mario breaks bricks with his fist. That's pretty damn obvious if you ask me.
Princess Peach's dress has changed over time. A glance at artwork could easily tell you that.
Shake your 3DS to get a surpise in Super Mario 3D Land. I won't spoil it for anyone, but knew it.
That thing at the end of the bridge is an ax. Duh.
Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi are all voiced by the same guy. Knew it.
Donkey Kong was originally a Popeye game. That's actually incorrect. It started development as a Popeye game, but MGM pulled the license before any cabinets could be commercially produced.
Kuribo is the Japanese name for Goombas. Knew it.
In Mario Golf, Luigi does sign language for "lesbian". Knew it
The first Mario Triple Jump was in Donkey Kong for Game Boy. Knew it, and I don't even own the game. :P
The grass and clouds in Super Mario Bros are the same. Knew it.
Princess Peach was once Princess Toadstool. Knew it.
The ending to Donkey Kong for Game Boy connects it to Super Mario Bros. Knew it.
Diddy Kong originally designed to be Donkey Kong Jr. Again, your second fallacy. Diddy was designed by Rare for Donkey Kong Country, almost a decade after DK Jr. was produced, specifically because Nintendo wouldn't allow them to use the real DK Jr.
Super Mario Bros 2's ending is foreshadowed from the beginning. Knew it.
The first d-pad was on a Mario game. In America, maybe. But Japan had the NES a lot longer than we did, and d-pad games were already mainstream there before Super Mario Bros. came out. So you've got the general idea, but there are others.
Geno from Super Mario RPG has appeared in one other game. Superstar Saga
The P in P-Wing stands for Paratroopa. Well, it just stands for "para-", and does not specifically mention Paratroopas, but I'll give you the points for that one.
Japan got a version of Super Mario 64 that used the Rumble Pak. Knew it
Tatanga, the final boss of Super Mario Land, makes one other appearance in Super Mario Land 2. Knew it
