Gotta admit, the idea of common enemies riding Yoshi like Baby Mario is pretty cute

I didn't get a very clear sense of how this game actually works—like how you determine what your goals in a level are, or how obstacles would stand in your way if the game is retooling enemy species as companions to study. Mysterious indeed. Or is that just me?

I think its clear. It's like, wiki stuff. The collectibles are probably literally using each property of a species for the first time, or failing that, getting some kind of "data file" item behind an obstacle that requires a species' help. Somehow I doubt every enemy can join Yoshi, in the same way not every enemy in Super Mario Odyssey can be captured. They probably can be used in ways that help, but not in ways that necessarily have them jump on Yoshi's back.

I also don't think Nintendo is about to create a platformer with no straight up enemy characters, and if they were that's probably part of the pitch you put in the initial announcement.

I really like the style of it, not entirely sure of how the game plays though.

yoshi platformers are on autopilot, feels like they just churn these out for young children. this one looks like "oh it's another yoshi platformer".

which is fine, but they're entirely skippable. this is also coming from someone who detests the snes yoshi's island too.

At least you admitted you were wrong
that's the first step
