What style of hat does Mario wear?

Like what type of hat would be the real-life equivalent of Mario's cap? I've always wondered this being both a huge Mario fan and a collector of hats, and I've never seen any official comment on it (and it's not really something I expect to be honest). I guess I'm thinking about this because I bought Cappy today at GameStop and it seems like every time they come out with a replica of a Mario hat, it's always kind of comically huge or something; it never just looks like a normal hat.
The styles that seem to come closest are either a painters cap or a newsboy/gatsby hat. When I was little I wanted to try and find hats like the ones Captain Lou and Danny Wells wore on the Super Show, but even those don't seem to be just modifications of a normal style of hat, at least not one I've ever seen.
I dunno why I'm so concerned about this, I guess it's just a long time blank I'd like to fill in, but if anyone has some kind of info that I don't know about, that'd be cool to hear.

It looks to me like either a fiddler cap, a fisherman cap, or a baker boy's hat! They all look pretty similar, I'm not sure what the differences between the three are. (Also I'm new to forums, not sure how long is too long to reply to a board, sorry if it's too late to respond to this one)

dont sweat it, people reply to threads much less active than this one was all the time. while its discouraged, you dont really get more than a slap on the wrist unless you're doing it frequently or not really adding anything to the discussion

while its bumped, id imagine he's got a carpenter cap on, considering he was designed with a carpenter in mind.

It looks like a Greek Fisherman Hat. ;)

meanwhile mr. LB over here bumps it from four months longer ago

Also, Mario's hat is obviously a ghost duh

Well, it's the same type of hat that Popeye wears, which I assume is a fisherman cap. Mario's design is a mix between Popeye's head and Micky Mouse's body.

I was actually quite shocked to see such similarity.

I think you have to differentiate between the origin of Mario's hat, and the OP's actual question which is what real-life hat is most like Mario's hat (not Popeye's). In the real world, there is no such thing as a captain's hat, or fisherman's hat, that actually looks like Mario's hat, nor would a plumber ever realistically be wearing that.

I think Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi wear a cross between newsboy hats and baseball caps. In fact, I think their caps have become a category of their own.

Look at my links, especially the second one where you can see a flat cap with the front unbuttoned. I don't think you will find any closer match.

Ah, Ok. Just because Mario's hat is inspired by Popeye's hat, does not mean they are wearing the same type of hat.
I looked at your links. The newsboy's hat is very convincing. I think I am inclined to agree with you. The only problem is the button, there aren't any buttons on Mario's hat. Maybe that's just a cartoony design choice to leave it out. I would think it would look weird to have a button like that on Mario's hat.

What do you think about the hat from Mario bros..
It looks a bit different. More lumpy. And it's blue.

Player characters Mario and Luigi surround a green sewer pipe whilst being surrounded by a turtle (Shellcreeper), a fly (Fighter Fly) and a crab (Sidestepper), the latter of which is hiding inside the pipe.

I think the lumpy blue hat from the Mario Bros is just an odd choice on the part of the artist. I don't know of any real hat that looks anything like that. As far as the reason it's blue: At this time, hardware limitations meant you were restricted in the number of colors on the sprite. You will notice that in these early games, Mario's hat and overalls were always the same color. They needed contrast for visibility, so they didn't want his hat and shirt to be the same color. So that means you had to either have Red Hat + Red Overalls, or Blue Hat + Blue Overalls. Once graphics improved (i.e. in Mario 2), they were able to give Mario blue denim overalls, which makes a lot more sense. Too bad the cartoon never caught on!

I am not sure you can say they deliberately left off the buttons, because honestly I don't think they put anywhere near as much thought into this as we are doing here. But it's fun to imagine it, anyway. Also if somebody were to want to dress as Mario without wearing a cheap costume, this would be nice to know.

One final clarification: Mario's hat is really a "flat cap" (also sometimes called ivy cap), *not* a newsboy, which is a little different. The newsboy has triangular sections that go up to a button on the top. But most sites don't realize this and they confuse things by using these terms interchangeably. Also, most flat caps don't even allow you to unbutton the front, but these particular ones from Epoch Hats do allow it.

I don't think you can buy that cap style generally like at department stores such as JcPenney lol.

Wow well Amazon really does sell everything lol. I also don't think people wear Mario style caps out and about typically.
