How much do you think developers knew of each sport they made a Mario game out of?

The people who developed Mario Power Tennis, Nes Open Tournament Golf, GCN Mario Strikers and more made very fun games, but I wonder if they did so without being fans of each. Maybe they didn't know any players aside from the very best 2 or 3 ones they had to know of to make the game, didn't watch any leagues/tournaments frequently, etc. Also because they're lots of sports at once, too.

I could see that especially if those sports are not very popular in their home country, though soccer/football is popular most countries, so you'd expect Mario Strikers to make a profit.

This is a pretty impossible question to come to an answer on without like an interview. From what I know from other media productions (not video games admittedly), there's probably at least one person at the company who knows about the given sport really well, and thus its the experience of that expert or experts that is used to make sure the final game properly reflects what fans love about the sport. Failing that, a company could always hire one or more consultants who are that expert and then ask them questions to make sure things are on track.

I'm sure at least on developer knows the basic rules of each sport. As for how into it they are, it's virtually impossible to say.
