What if: The 1991 Fantasy Draft for the Live-Action Movie was Produced.

As many of you probably know, the 1993 film's roots stem from earlier attempts to adapt the Mario games into a film. The most famous example being the 1991 script by Tom S. Parker and Jim Jennewin (The Flintstones 1994).

The question I present as a point of discussion is: what are your theories on if the 1991 draft was produced, and how could it have affected Nintendo and its relationship with people wishing to adapt its IPs?

The thing would've been more positively received, more reflective of the worldbuilding of the source material. I like the one we got, the bros being characterized as a duo of constantly annoyed New Englanders will always be funny, but damn would I have enjoyed the fantasy version more. I love when Mario stuff leans into the fairytale elements, l adore kinder camp, would've been awesome. If it got made, we would've gotten more material like it... Now I'm sad.

Indeed. I already can imagine a 2000s Zelda film directed by Terry Gilliam with Rosamund Pike as Zelda.

Another idea I had was an adaptation of Star Fox using combined puppetry, models, and CGI that is produced in collaboration with David Mitton and other people who worked on the Classic Series of Thomas & Friends. The main reason being that they used to work on Thunderbirds, which was a major inspiration for Star Fox.

I have since written up an alternate history for if Joe Dante had directed the 1993 film using the fantasy draft.
