We say soccer because of British schools kids that used slang and abbreviations.

There were two types of football back in the day,"Rugby Football" and "Association Football". The major difference here was the use of hands.

Because of shortening and slang, Association Football became Assoc which became a number of other things before becoming "soccer".

Therefore, it is all the Brit's fault for inventing the word "Soccer".
