Why do they need to be cropped? I would like to see the whole thing when I upload them, especially if they're not squares. Also, I wonder if moving avatars (such as GIFs) can be used too.

Well, I remember that GIFs could be used on the SMF engine before the switch to XenForo, dunno why they got rid of that.

while i dont know for sure, i imagine its specifically a xenforo thing and in that case theres not much they could do about that

Even if the dimensions weren't squares the old software would stretch them until they had square dimensions. It's simply more presentable and consistent to work with if they all had the same dimensions especially since the avatars need to be resized to be smaller anyway.

Also, in internet explorer in xenforo, the icons are stretched so much that you can't even see them clearly. That's why I decided to switch to Chrome for desktop viewing after a few days.

The Pokémon forums (Bulbagarden) are also created using xenforo but the avatars aren't cropped
