World 8 is Peach's domain. The letter you get after beating W7 is from Bowser, it says I captured the princess while you were running around. When you defeat Bowser, she makes the joke about the princess being in another castle, then says bye bye. The bye bye could just be 4th wall breaking, but what if she's talking to Mario?

That's interesting. Especially the part about Bowser kidnapping Peach "while you were running around."
 
So I've been told that SMB3 is canonically a play, which would explain Peach's dialogue.
