Shmwario wearing baseball getup kinda reminds me of Principal Prickly from Disney's Recess in that golf gear he wore in the School's Out movie (I think?). Plus, I love the Dollar Bill character, and can't help but feel they would make for a good Paper Mario 64/Thousand Year Door partner character for either Mario or Luigi.

Got the idea for a scribble featuring big bads from various 'Shroom sections, so we've got Mind Master, General Zellon, Mr. O'Ween, Bar D. Jokue, and Monty Brando. Mind Master's kind of pushing it since he's not really the main villain of a section but I wanted to give a nod to Boo's work here.

I still feel quite honored to have my main bad guy, General Zellon get visualized for The 'Shroom's Summer Special Villain Takeover. It really feels like a sign that I'm doing something good when writing Sport Report: The Movie!
 
While He's not a main Shroom Villain YET he is a very Big Threat overall and if anyone wants to write storys featuring him they can also He hopefully will become a much bigger and consistent Villain down the line

Figured it was about time I did a new drawing of Bandwich, seeing as he was in my 'Shroom one-off for Issue 219. Last time I drew him in 2021 he was a standard-issue blue Bandit, so I decided to, you know, actually design something.

Between the release of Bananza and him being somewhat relevant to the current arc in Shmaluigi, Private Investigator, I decided it was also a good time to draw Kreep from the Tidal Terror arc!

The loosely Bananza inspired theme continues with something slightly more Bananza inspired. Here's King Kong from AAAA having the misfortune of carrying Small Obnoxious Waluigi Time around. I didn't want to fully redesign him to match DK's Switch 2 design, because he's his own character (and it's not like they dropped all hints of that design, hi Cranky), but I tweaked him a little to add some bits of the new design that I thought would look nice.

Reminds me of a similar drawing Mike Matei made for Cinemassacre's YKWBS video on vampires, which depicted a generic vampire hiding underneath a parasol from the sun with an irritable expression directed towards the viewer. Nice job on this one. 👍👍
 
Time for Awards stuff! For the first time since 2021, I actually didn't go past the maximum presentations you're supposed to do because we had a lot of cool people make cool presentations and very little work had to go to backups! Super proud of you all, thanks for helping to make a great Awards.

C9. Favorite 2024 Awards Presentation
This was the last one I grabbed, sign-ups were slowing down and this was one of the last couple of open slots so I thought why not. I will fully admit I abused my Clown Car privilege to see what was leading in the votes, and only took it because the prospective winner inspired me! I don't really want to post the full comic here because it's big and in a lot of parts, but it's linked right up there so you can check it out if you want.

Anyway, since TPG's presentation was Scribble-themed I decided to do a continuation story with the alternate versions of my characters from THE Scribble Smorgasbord (which, if you're not up to speed, are mashed up with various Spider-Man characters) where they're sent to participate in the Scribble Royale tournament from that presentation, with a few creative liberties. I also needed a lot more characters, and perhaps this went unnoticed but I actually did put some thought into them!
  • For BBQ's card, the Scribbler Six fight Viola Cadaverini as Silver Sable. This one's kind of a stretch but I figured the connection to BBQ's OC also being a human female worked. Viola fit the role of Silver Sable (specifically the interpretation in The Spectacular Spider-Man which I'm mostly pulling from for these) fit like a glove though, since Sable's part of a highly influential crime family.
  • For Shoey's card, Shmaluigi, Shmwario, and Shmaisy show up, which is actually the most direct any of these get since Shmaluigi did show up in the original presentation. The idea of Shmaluigi as a Scuttlebug version of Spider-Man goes back to Smorgasbord but I never used him, and since Marvel loves their AU Spider-People it seemed fitting to bring the others along. Shmaisy is a Pider version of Spider-Gwen, and Shmwario is... kind of sort of the Miles Morales equivalent, I guess?? Honestly, I think he ends up mostly just being another Spider-Man instead of an equivalent to any particular character. But he gets to be a Spoing from Galaxy. You may notice they don't have the groucho noses their normal counterparts do, because I figured they wouldn't need them under the costumes. I reverted back to how Waluigi's nose is drawn in Nakaue's artwork to distinguish WT a little more.
  • For MCD's card, Cosmo plays the role of Black Cat. This was one where I kind of worked backwards, because I decided I wanted him in first and then decided where to slot him in later (before I ironed things out fully, I thought maybe he would be getting the cards to sell to Hardblock). MCD's OC is a small animal character... Cosmo's a small animal character... Yeah it's the stretchiest one but it's fine.
  • For Yap's card, Shippy gets to be the Lizard (and have legs!), which seemed like a natural fit since he does a lot of stuff with reptile characters. I imagine this version of Shippy was once human (and I have an idea for what that design looks like) before being turned into this somehow. She hangs on to her humanity a lot better than Lizard does, though. After all, the original idea behind the Scribbler Six was that they were pretty normal guys with normal jobs (well, besides Perry) as a funny contrast to the supervillain designs.
  • For TPG's card, Terrakingpin and Hammond Hammer play Tombstone and Hammerhead. In The Spectacular Spider-Man, Tombstone is the big bad for most of the series, so him allegedly showing up as the final opponent made sense here. I named him after Hard Blocks in reference to the infamous categorization debates about them that happened on the wiki recently, which gets joked about! Also, as part of the fake-out, his golden color is ever-so-slightly off of TPG's from 2024.
  • With TPG's king motifs in Scribble, I couldn't resist having him show up in the flesh as Kingpin himself, to completely annihilate the Scribbler Six! Kingpin is, of course, way higher up on the totem pole than Tombstone in the comics, even though he couldn't appear in Spectacular due to rights issues.
J. Jonah Jameshoe, who was namedropped in Smorgasbord, also shows up for a brief appearance to cement the connection with Shmaluigi a little bit more. Apparently this version of Connor doesn't need to keep his identity under wraps as much. I also updated Doctor Wactopus' design to match general redesign for WT, and gave him Doc Ock's tentacles from Spectacular. My justification is that L. Power paid for them after he joined the company.

As for the comic itself, this was heavily inspired by TB's comics for Smorgasbord, with a similar beginning (quotably noted by Tellectro as being intentional parallels to previous events). The cards are originally TPG's design from the winning presentation, which I redrew from scratch with elements from the top five - the colors are all the most recent Scribble colors (pre-Circuit) used by each presenter. I think Shoey's is my favorite, because I really like how the lighting effects on Big Eelser Generboom turned out.

Surprise cameo of the ARKG Office Workers, since the presentation was very vertical I thought it would be funny to frame putting it in a spoiler as some workplace safety thing, given the usual setting of the Scribbler Six's "adventures". Good job, Office Worker.

C13. Favorite Community Character
Now this is the one I had the oldest idea for, going back roughly around the time of The 'Shroom's Thousand-Year Door special, because doing the Paper Mario staff portraits was fun. This was still fun, but I should really stop mass-producing these on a deadline because it's very stressful. I think these are an improvement from the staff portraits, but there's still a long way to go before I reach FTG's mastery of the style. Perhaps someday! Major thanks to Pitohui for being my second opinion on what worked and what didn't, because characters with legs are nightmarish to adapt into this style.

A few notes:
  • Marcia isn't shaded, because she's Scribble-compliant!
  • The Bin Brothers use intentionally simplified designs, I figure this is probably how they would've looked in the Paper Mario style in a pre-Junker world.
  • ENA using the Super Paper Mario design language over Thousand-Year Door is my favorite gag of sorts in this one. She's made of shapes, it was a natural fit!
  • I don't know how well Pheel would work if he actually had to be in motion, he was a tricky one to get down. Paper Mario doesn't have many sea creatures to reference.
  • I had a little bit of a head start on Shmaluigi and Pyro thanks to my work on the staff portraits, but I had to draw over them anyway because I was using different techniques here.

Despite the idea being pretty old, I almost passed it over for an entirely different concept! It was another one from Shmaluigi's POV, this time involving him being tricked by Teller Vision into being the main contestant in a trivia show involving the other nominees. The idea was that Teller would be bitter towards Shmaluigi for beating him in Favorite Community Character last year (those two are still yet to meet canonically, which I need to fix one of these days). It definitely would've been non-canon, though. I never fully ironed out the idea, so I went back to the original concept, and I'm pretty glad I did.

M8. Favorite Game Mechanic
Obligatory Waluigi Time Comic! I decided to keep this year's a lot more simple with a whopping ten panels. And then I did a huge comic for another presentation instead, so... that plan was questionable. But, this is the first proper appearance of Bumper from HR (in the flesh, he was mentioned in one edition of Shmaluigi PI) and Bo Tanica the company lawyer! I drew them in 2022 and never used them for anything after that...

I also helped Camwoodstock with the Donkey Kong Land render for Worst Game Aesthetic. Everything here was modeled from scratch although the Banana Coin texture is taken from the official artwork and the background is a blurred Donkey Kong Country Returns screenshot of DK's treehouse.

Love how Shmwario's real self also has similarities to Wario, much like how Shmaluigi's real self has similarities to Waluigi. I'm also getting real J. Jonah Jamesson and Commissioner James Gordon vibes from the design. Plus, it really helps to finalize my headcanon of the late Captain Lou Albano as Mario being the voice for Shmwario's real self.

It's also nice to get a glance at Jasmine's standard design for when she isn't dressing up for any particular occasion, and it fits her well. It really paints a picture of what a Shadow Siren would look like when fitting into civilian life.

Ok FR why the heck does jasmine look so cute? he desgin fits her perfectly also YAY! we finally got russos desgin! and speaking of duplighosts now all you have to do is Tripliss and the duplighost gang will be complete!
