The trick to pulling off such a thing:
have them talk

The characters have voices, there's no real good reason for them not to.
 
Besides, they do talk quite a bit in Mario Power Tennis.
 
People keep confusing Mario with Link when it comes to silent protagonists.

Hell, you can make Link talk if your writing is good. That manga did, and it wasn't the end of the world.
