During WWII, Japan had occupied some Aleutian Islands, including Kiska. In August 1943, the military forces of United States and Canada launched an operation (called Operation Cottage) to retake the islands. Eventuually, the islands were retaken, but it took 32 deaths and 300 casualties in general.
But here's the twist. Two weeks prior, Japan had left the island. The deaths and casualties were from friendly fire, difficult terrain and Japanese mines.
