I hope so. I'd like to see him interact with his dad.

Not really. We had Mario Golf Toadstool Tour, but again, stuff like Tanooki Mario exists.

The bad ending for Super Mario Sunshine implied Il Piantissimo got the Gaddbrush and Shadow Mario makes similar poses to him in Toadstool Tour.
 
I'm going to predict stuff that will happen in the next game.

Peach will get kidnapped
Mario will fight solo at first
You will fight Bowser at some point
There will be tutorials
Eventually you'll have to go on a big quest to collect the necessary objects that will lead to the final or semi-final level.
Luigi will get hurt
 
I hope they change it up and don't have Peach kidnapped in the next one. Even if Bowser is the main villain, he could do something besides kidnap her for once.
 
Unless she's playable I wouldn't count on that.

Some gimmick from the system is heavily applied and ends up bogging down the game.
