Actually, characters like Sonic stand a greater chance because of Mario & Sonic games and Sonic having a long history as Nintendo's biggest rival

Because Waluigi, Toadette, and Daisy all appeared in canon games as well as some Mario Party hosts

OK, I stated it wrong. I mean if they are staples they're fine, but new additions should draw from canon games. Crap like Pink Gold Peach shouldn't exist (Yes I know this is Party not Kart, but just saying)

lol did u say that mario has a canon

The only games Nintendo doesn't really acknowledge are Hotel Mario and maybe some edutainment games.
 
I wouldn't hate it if Sonic was playable, but he shouldn't be in over several other potential candidates.

Here's a wild idea: Bomberman to represent Hudson Soft (RIP :'(). It won't happen unless Konami allows it, but it would be pretty awesome to have Hudson's mascot join the party. In addition, Bomberman starred in a crossover with Wario back in the day and has a notable history on Nintendo platforms.
 
It better be Bomberman's actual self, not that butchered thing. Although it would be hilarious.

No I would prefer if they made a minigame centered around brutally torturing it with real Bomberman
