I hope the "year of Character" on their 30th year becomes a pattern so:

Mario and Bowser and Donkey Kong excluded because, well they are extremely major characters in some way and the first and last have already passed their 30th year.
 
$50 says Waluigi will hijack this and make every year the Year of Waluigi long before 2030.
 
Now I could see the Year of Toad being very likely. You need to remember that there are other anniversaries for Nintendo franchises, though.
