Ridley for Smash Bros.: The Go-To topic for Ridley Discussions

What are you guys talking about? They did show the wing, and I can confirm that it's not meta ridley's.

As Meta Ridley doesn't have the purple, while this obviously shows purple on it.
I realize that now. In fact, other people I know have pointed that the shadow Ridley has spiked arms, making it seem like the Ridley here is the clone Ridley from Metroid: Other M... which makes sense.

I do hope you realize that "he's too big" and "he would look out of place" are not the only two arguments.

I never wanted him as a character, and I've stated many times why he should not be a playable character (not using those two arguments that apparently all anti-ridley people say). And honestly, I like that Sakurai didn't reveal Ridley then and now, since it starts making fans think that "Ridley is most likely a boss, but may be a character still" and let them not get completely destroyed when he reveals him as a boss. Also because it makes more hype like he did with Palutena's trophy and all that jazz.

But yeah, I just don't think Ridley is suitable as a playable character for any Smash Bros. game. I much rather have him as a boss character than a playable character.
Forgive me for what I am about to say, as I know you said you've "stated many times why he should not be playable", but judging from what you said here and only what you said here, you seem to be leaning towards the "he would look out of place" argument. That and you said you never wanted him, which his hardly and excuse. How many people wanted Wii Fit Trainer and Greninja again?

I honestly don't see the point in not revealing it right now. If he really is just going to be a boss, why not out and say it rather then keep us hoping only to dash them when it's finally unveiled?

I have yet to see a legitamtie reason against Ridley. The too big argument has been done to death and has been easily disproven in the past.

And don't give me that "he would look out of place" nonsense. We've had Solid Snake, who's more out of place than anyone lose.

could you link me to these arguments that state why you don't think Ridley would be suitable as a playable character

I have an idea: When Ridley is played as, the boss is replaced with Meta Ridley
Plus, Ridley's size in Melee's intro was the same as the NES game, so the too big argument is invalid.

It's been always invalid ever since it was made.

He's too big.
Scale him down.

Charizard clone
Absolutely not. Why the hell would you think he would be a clone?

Has wings to fly
So do a lot of characters

You don't know if he would be or not. Being big does not make you a good character. Bowser is a great example. He's horrible.

Not interesting enough
He's a giant dragon. What else do you want?

Been seen in the direct as a boss
We only saw his shadow. This is Sakurai. Nothing is 100% confirmed until he says it is.

Metroid has been abandoned as a series.
That has never stopped characters from appearing before. Besides, Other M came out not too long ago.

What's really interesting is the fact that Sakurai keeps hinting and teasing Ridley. He hasn't done that with any other character but him. Look at characters like Dillon or Waluigi. He outright de-confirms them. No vague hinting. So why would he do that to Ridley? Why drag out his reveal if it is nothing more than a stage hazard?

If after all this teasing and hyping, Ridley only amounts to a meager stage hazard, then fans have a right to be very mad.

So I don't see any reason why the regular Ridley (the one from the original trilogy), can't be up then.

Figured I'd bump this thread. I have several videos detailing why Ridley will be playable.

Also, read these first few posts
http://smashboards.com/threads/the-ridley-for-ssb4-thread-gematsu-drank-the-splounge-water.324284/

Long story short (but you should still watch the videos), here's why he will be playable.

*He's not "too big". Smash does not keep to scale. plus, I've seen pictures detailing how Ridley could easily be scaled own, like so.

*Sakurai as not outright deconfirmed Ridley. In the past, Sakurai explicitly stated whether a character was playable or not. When Skull Kid and Waluigi were shown as assists in the Pic of the Day, he put a strong emphasis on the fact that they were not playable. When a character is playable like Toon Link or Palutena was hinted before their reveal, he did not say their name until they were revealed.

*People have analyzed the shadow, taking the size of Pyrosphere and Pikachu into account. Based on the shadow, he's only a little larger than Bowser. If he were a boss, he'd be much bigger.

*The way the shadow moved is very much like a playable character. The animations were very choppy and did not have very smooth transitions like a boss would. Not to mention he flew slowly, came to a halt, and just did nothing. That's not exactly "boss behavior"

*He is one of, if not THE most requested character. And given all the fan service in the game already, it would make sense.

*Metroid deserves another rep. It's a major series. If Fire Emblem can have four, Metroid can have at least three. No one else is a suitable Metroid rep. The bounty hunters appeared in one game and they are not that iconic, and Dark Samus is already an assist trophy.

*He would be a unique character. He could be an anti-Little mac. Maybe his ground game could be lackluster, but he could be a nightmare in the air.

*The trophy theory. As we know, four trophies were shown in the Smash direct. They were Tiki from FE, Fi from Zelda, Pseudo-Palutena from Kid icarus, and King Kihunter from Metroid. In addition, Robin's theme played over the Tiki trophy, the Ballad of the Sky Goddess (which features Ghirahim's theme) played over Fi's trophy, Palutena's theme played over the Pseudo Palutena trophy, and Ridley's theme played over the King Kihunter trophy. Guess who was confirmed to be playable? Robin and Palutena. This gives me hope not only for ridley, but also for Ghirahim.

*Why would Sakurai have all this build-up to lead to nothing but a stage hazard? Sakurai has said he doesn;t like creating fake hype (http://www.polygon.com/2012/12/12/3757906/masahiro-sakurai-on-handling-twitter-whiners-and-oh-yes-the-new-smash).

*There is likely to be a direct in August showing off a new character. Most Metroid games release in august. Said direct would be the last direct before the game launches in Japan. What better way to hype up the game than to show one big, popular newcomer?

Thus ends my argument for Ridley in Smash. At this point, I feel his inclusion is inevitable.

I want Ridley. But Daisy, Sceptile, and Dixie Kong should have priority.
I'm laughing at how dumb this is.

The main villain of a very popular, under represented series has less priority than a Peach skin, a starter pokemon which are a dime a dozen, and Dixie?

Now I agree Dixie has a chance, but she in no way should have priority over someone like Ridley. The other two have no chance.

Nintendo should make a "Ridley for Smash Bros." Nintendo direct about Ridley being in ssb4, and then at the end of the 30 min video, deconfirm him. ;D

But to make a bunch a footage for Ridley then deconfirm him is...a waste of time for Nintendo.

Not as much as the time wasted arguing he should or shouldn't be in.

And to troll obviously.

This theory makes me wonder, if Ghirahim is playable, is he replacing Ganondorf? Zelda already has 4 reps, and while it's reasonable to assume they'll have more reps than Fire Emblem (which is firmly sitting at 4), I can't see them having more reps than Mario (which currently is sitting at 5).

If anything, Zelda should be tied with Mario and Pokemon for top representation.

As for Ridley, I see absolutely no reason for him to not be playable. He's the only adequate rep left for the Metroid series, the current roster is seriously lacking in villains, and yeah, he's got to be one of the most requested characters. I think he could make for an interesting moveset and playstyle, honestly.

I don't see them cutting Ganondorf. It is very possible that instead of a Zelda newcomer, we just get a revamped Ganondorf. That doesn't mean Ghorahim is out. Now, Pokemon did have six characters in Brawl. Like it or not, I'm pretty sure Sakurai has referred to Brawl as having 39 characters, which means Sheik, ZSS, and the Trainer's Pokemon all count separately.

It would make the most sense for each of the "big three" to have five characters. We know our five Mario characters. We have four Zelda characters with Ganondorf likely being the fifth. We also have four Pokemon, with Jigglypuff likely being the fifth. But, the trophy theory possibly would give us six each. But in Brawl, Mario had four, Zelda had five, and Pokemon had six. They don't have to be even.

But for fun, let's say all three get six characters. The sixth Zelda character would be Ghirahim going by the trophy theory, but could be Impa. The sixth Pokemon would definitely be Mewtwo. As for Mario, I would say Toad but that's Peach's neutral special. However, it could be a placeholder. Remember how the boxing ring stage looked different before Little Mac was revealed? Not to mention Sakurai said Peach's moves could be subject to change. With custom moves, it's also possible Peach would do something else for that move.
