General Science Discussion Thread!

[crashes through the wall] DID SOMEONE SAY SPACE???

DID YOU KNOW PROXIMA CENTAURI IS THE CLOSEST STAR BESIDES OUR SON TO EARTH, LOCATED AT 4.2 LIGHT YEARS AWAY???

DID YOU KNOW YOU'D TAKE ABOUT 1,100 YEARS IF YOU'RE GOING 900 KM/H TO CIRCLE VY CANIS MAJORIS, THE LARGEST STAR KNOWN TO HUMANS, BEING 1800 TO 2000 TIMES LARGER THAN OUR SUN??

DID YOU KNOW EARTH HAD A TWIN PLANET NAMED THEIA, BUT IT GOT DESTROYED WHEN IT CRASHED WITH EARTH LIKE 4.5 BILLION YEARS AGO AND PRODUCED OUR HELLA AWESOME MOON??

DID YOU KNOW DARK MATTER AND ENERGY EXISTS, MAKING UP ~27 AND ~68 PERCENT OF THE UNIVERSE, RESPECTIVLY, AND NO ONE REALLY KNOWS SHIT ABOUT IT EXCEPT IT MIGHT BE EXPANDING OUR UNIVERSE AND GIVES OFF AN 'EMPTY' LOOK??

DID YOU KNOW THAT A TEASPOON OF NEUTRON STAR, THATS RIGHT, NEUTRON STAR, WOULD WEIGH AROUND 10 MILLION TONS, or 9071847400 KILOGRAMS AND 2E+10 POUNDS?? THATS RIGHT WE GOT NUMBERS NOW

Theia may or may not exist, although it's generally accepted by scientists since it best explains the formation of the moon. But still, Theia is not conclusive.

And, you know that posting in all caps is generally discouraged, right?

It is "just" a theory. Just like the "cell theory".

See what happens when slang distorts a word so much that it loses its meaning and opens itself to ambiguity?

well, it's pretty much accepted as fact
the force is that pulls things to the center of earth exists. that is fact

"Theory" and "fact" aren't mutually exclusive.

Theory: " a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that is acquired through the scientific method, and repeatedly confirmed through observation and experimentation."

So the two can overlap.

i realize that, but when people say "gravity is a theory" they often fail to clarify that

whatever you call that force (i call it gravity), it is a fact that it exists. and when you try to tell people that gravity is a theory they'll tell you that it's not a theory because they've experienced it firsthand. theories are usually things that are pretty abstract, and to tell people that a force they've experienced all their life is just a theory is kinda silly when we all know that it exists.

i think you need to clarify that you're talking about the abstract theory of gravity and not the concrete fact of gravitational force, which certainly exists

Well now I just feel stupid...then again half the people on this thread are using google and yahoo answers to reply so I feel a little better now.

No, people confuse the two "theory" definitions, so those who try arguing, "Evolution is 'just' a theory" are often quickly rebutted with "Gravity is 'just' a theory, too". Theories are not necessarily abstract; they're adequately-supported explanations that are consistently confirmed via scientific method; hence, it's most likely a fact. It's only when people try injecting the layman version of "theory" in their argument is when we argue back about gravity.

Regardless of your opinion on Wikipedia, stars such as UY Scuti and Westerlund 1-26 are very clearly bigger than the star you mentioned, and they're all cited with reputable sources.
I acknowledge this, but (s)he should use better sources in the future

...Seriously? Wikipedia is as much of a reputable source as anything else. As long as its information is cited, there's absolutely no harm in citing it. That's like saying that our MarioWiki is worthless, and I can tell you that everyone's work has certainly not gone to waste.

Consider this: Most Universities don't accept papers citing Wikipedia. Hell, even high schools won't in certain cases
