Is the actual game like the demo (it forces you to play as a different character for each event)?

Well, you can only choose from a certain category of characters for certain event (like The Heroes, which consists of Mario, Sonic, Luigi, and Tails) if that is what you meant.

Try being broken and unfair yourself. My sister had a hard time beating Strikers and Crystal cup computers until she started being broken, unfair, and mean herself
