Your headcanons

Adult Bowser's Castle is in Dark Land, but that's not the only castle he's ever had. Baby Bowser's Castle was on Yoshi's Island, and the game makes that quite clear. It's not until Partners in Time (where his horns are beginning to grow, indicating that he's older than he was in YI) that he's shown to have a castle anywhere near the Mushroom Kingdom.

That's not yoshi's island. In fact you have to leave yoshi's island to get there.
 
I was re-watching the cutscene just to be sure while you made that post, and it's more likely to be in the Valley of Bowser than in Dark Land.
 
The valley of Bowser didn't exist back then. That was built by adult Bowser, hence why it has the adult's face.
 
The main entrance was built for sure (punched open with an airship, by the looks of it), but the cavern could easily have been there all along (and just accessed via Warp Pipe) - I doubt Bowser would have built in a Warp Star had he designed the whole place. Anyway, while there's a thunderstom in the Valley of Bowser somehow, the YI castle seems to be outside, but it doesn't fit the perpetually overcast depictions of Bowser's Castle's surroundings in most other games, so rather than Dark Land, I generally feel like it's another nearby island entirely that the Koopas abandon after the destruction of their castle.

Seeing another mention of "Dragon Koopas" has reminded me of another facecanon I have. Bowser and his family are Boom Booms, which are basically just hefty Koopas with ox-like muzzles and sometimes spikes and/or fire breath. Boom Booms are alternatively known as "Dinosaur Land Koopas" to differentiate them from Mushroom Kingdom Koopas, and that's why Bowser lived on Yoshi's Island during childhood and why Sumo Bros. and Football Charlies are also found in Dinosaur Land, because they're Boom Booms with specific skills.

Imo, there's too many differences between Boom Booms and Dragon-Koopas for them to be the same species, the most major being that Dragon-Koopas have soft belly scutes separated from their carapaces by regular scaled flesh, while Boom Booms (and the closely related Sumo Bro) have wraparound plastrons. They also lack the paired head horns, spiked tail and flexible shells of adult Dragon-Koopas, suggesting there's neoteny in their evolutionary line, making them resemble hornless, small-eyed juvenile Dragon-Koopas (although some youngsters already have horns - hence the other neotenic species, Koopa Kids, have horns too). Sumo Bro are of the same line as Boom Booms (they're definitely sister species), but their single head horn and lightning/fire abilities set them apart from the transformation-magic-specializing Boom Booms (although as seen in Pom Pom, Boom, Booms can have smooth shells like Sumo bros - and unlike Dragon-Koopas).

I still like the idea that "turtle" is a derogatory term for Koopas. I consider Shellcreepers their own species of four-legged colour-changing Koopa - the precursors to Koopeleons, and the descendants of four-legged Koopa Troopas.
 
okay but where do the Mural Koopas fit into this. since they're meant to be a depiction of what koopas looked like in the past, what evolved into what in terms of them
 
Could be another offshoot of 4-legged Koopa Troopas that dead-ended and went extinct, since their long legs aren't really seen in any extant Koopas (the closest would actually be Snooze-a-Koopas, really, but that doesn't work geographically).
 
I just think the latter 2 PM's exist in their own little world.
 
Bowser has many different identical shells, and he has them in a hidden closet. Then when MK:DD occurred he donated them all to be used as items
 
In Super Mario 3D World, Bowser just wanted the Sprixies so he could make World Bowser: A Bowser Theme Park.
 
Welp, I'm new around here, and this is the first topic to catch my eye, so I figured I'd throw in my two cents! Keep in mind that I'm working on a web comic series based mainly on the Mario series, so my headcanon will sound rather complicated and doesn't deviate too much from the series canon. Anyways, here goes:

The Past

Ever notice how while there are games featuring Mario as a baby and as an adult, there are no games featuring him at any age between those two points in his life? To me, this is because of the events of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. I imagine at the beginning of the game, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi were dropped off at Peach's Castle by their parents to be watched over by Toadsworth while they went on some sort of romantic getaway or whatever. By the time the Shroobs invaded the Mushroom Kingdom, they were too far away to help their children. Of course, being Mario and Luigi [and with the help of their older selves], they not only survived the invasion, they defeated the Shroobs. Despite this, the Mario Bros' mom (who I call Luana in my story) couldn't take the idea of her kids being placed in danger any longer (considering that they were kidnapped like three times before at this point), so she demanded the family move out of the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario and Luigi spend the remainder of their childhood and teenage years in Diamond City; Luana suggested they move there because it was mostly inhabited by humans (as she feels the bros. could relate better with their own kind) and had next to no monsters. Wario was already living in Diamond City at the time the bros. moved there, and was none too happy with how all of the other kids favored Mario over him, so they often found themselves competing against each other (which is what started their rivalry to begin with). It's also at this time in their life when Mario and Luigi decided to follow in their father's footsteps and become plumbers as well. Meanwhile, Bowser was being trained by Kamek so that he could prepare to take command of the Koopa Troop once he became old enough, so no evil schemes were performed at this point. In other words, you could say this was "the golden age' in the series,when no evil threatened the world (unless Nintendo does make a game where you play as Mario as a pre-teen). The bros. move back into the Mushroom Kingdom after the events of Super Mario Bros. which of course leads to them abandoning their primary jobs as plumbers and instead becoming the heroes of the kingdom. Though their parents worry about them every now and then, they've come to accept the life Mario and Luigi have taken.
Relationships Between Characters
  • The Mario seen in the original Donkey Kong arcade game is Mario's grandfather, much like the Donkey Kong in that game is actually a younger Cranky Kong (who is the current Donkey Kong's grandfather). This makes the Pauline from this game the current Mario's grandmother. The Pauline seen in the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong games is Mario and Luigi's cousin, which explains why Mario still feels the need to rescue her (and she has brown hair, while the original was blonde).
  • Luigi and Daisy aren't officially a couple; while Daisy's love for Luigi is genuine and constant, he tends to fall for other women quite often (such as Princess Eclair from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door), though something usually comes up that prevents Luigi from having a chance with them. Luigi doesn't mind hanging out with Daisy and sees her as a good friend, but finds her personality a bit too overbearing for the relationship to go any further than that (even when they were babies she made him nervous!).
  • Kamek and Kammy Koopa are siblings, Kamek being the older brother while Kammy is the little sister (their ages aren't too far apart though).
  • The Toad Brigade are Mario's apprentices, all of them learning how to become adventurers from the bros. (which explains why they've been appearing in a lot of main series Mario games since Super Mario Galaxy; two of them, Blue and Yellow Toad, became good enough to actually defend themselves almost as well as Mario and Luigi can, as they are playable in the New Super Mario Bros. games.
  • Having been around them quite often as a baby, Mario can somewhat understand the language of the Yoshies, but he can't speak it. Yoshi (the main green one) will usually act as his translator when Mario talks to other Yoshies that can't speak human English, being bilingual.
  • Much like Kamek wound up becoming Bowser's adoptive father, Toadsworth is Peach's adoptive father. There is a connection to this, but I'm trying to work out the details on this one... :-\

I think it's the same guy, but just an inaccurate depiction of him. After all, humans age less quickly than hairy flea-infested apes. That being said, I think the Donkey Kong in Donkey Kong is sometimes Cranky, sometimes Donkey himself.

Mario wants to rescue Pauline because he's just a really nice guy, but he doesn't rescue her as much since he as a Toy Company to run and Pauline doesn't bake cake for him.
 
Bowser's shell is where he stores most of his personal belongings
 
I think Yoshi stores his personal belongings in his colon. Which explains the "eggs".
 
Yoshi is just some hick on an island. He doesn't have any belongings.
 
Unless she appears again, Kammy Koopa died of old age.
 
Poochy died while on the set of Paper Mario.
