Reminds me of that one logo.

nublar_raptor_by_michell_vall-d7apqam.png

basic JP styled raptor, done in vector (but I had to save as png to upload)

if anyone wants I can upload more of these, I have a ton and I never bothered converting them before to upload
I can upload them like this (as a tutorial) or just the final
(yes many of them are done almost as tutorials, or "parts packages" like this one is)

Re: Stars fan art

alexornis, its based on the WWD depiction
no one knows exactly what it would have looked like in life
colours are speculation

Re: Stars fan art

I was learning flash for school, and we've been getting used to its controls with doing some basic effects
so I did a basic color fade using a preexisting gif as a base, so I choose Mei Misaki just because >_<
mei_misaki_colour_fade_by_michell_vall-d7bhp6f.gif

unfortunately I couldn't find/credit who originally cut this clip out of the episode, since its been duplicated so many times (all I did was add the colour fade, but I do have other effects I tried (on my own gifs), but I have to convert them at school since I don't have flash)

Re: Stars fan art

I decided o try something a bit more "cartoony" (anthropomorphized)
I think kelenken turned out ok except the wing looks a bit weird (albeit not very much recognizable as kelenken)
come to think of it, I'm not even certain if kelenken had visible claws (or how many were visible)

Re: Stars fan art

just a sketch of geosternbergia and metriorhynchus from the other day, just to pass the time so they aren't great

these are the ones I did today, I put more thought into them (for a little project I've had in my head for a while, sort of a Mysterious Island type thing) please ignore the random idea scribbles >_<

Re: Stars fan art

I've done alterations/paint jobs in the past, and I decided to finally take some before/after shots
so I figured, why not merge it into a figure review?
Sorry for the crappy pictures, my tablet's camera is garbage and my digital is on the fritz
I'll be judging based on these criteria

Accuracy
How accurate the figure is compared to A) its real life counterpart or B) the latest evidence regarding its counterparts appearance

Playability
Some will/could be exempted from this, could also be seen as Pose-ability, etc. essentially how versatile a figure is

Overall Aesthetic
How I personally feel about the figures looks, are there strange/sloppy paint jobs, is it posed strangely, does the color scheme clash, etc.

Originality
This primarily applies to extinct species, but can also apply to others (especially in the case of repaints)

Final Verdict
My overall rating of the figure

I'll start with some figures I did some minor touch ups on yesterday
so without further ado, here's my nitpicking (and painting  )

Safari Ltd. dilophosaurus (toob)

Accuracy 3/5
A respectably accurate figure, but it has some issues that can stand out if you are familiar with dilophosaurus subtleties. It only has 3 fingers, this is a very common error in dilophosaurus figures. Overall the proportions are good, skull relative to torso, relative to limbs all seem nice, but the tail, comparing it to my references (I used mainly diagrams from here http://www.paleofile.com/Dinosaurs/Theropods/Dilophosaurus.asp ) is about 1/4 too long, and it doesn't taper nicely, although the latter seems to be done to allow the figure to stand. Other than leaning on its tail the posture seems reasonable for dilophosaurus mobility.

Playability 3/5
Relatively neutral pose (always a good thing in this regard), that is, other than the tail. The tail curls back behind the figure and turns back towards the head again, thus allowing the figure to balance on the end of its tail. Its not a huge issue, but its enough to bump it down from a 4.

Overall Aesthetic 2/5
The basic green and yellow wasn't a bad color scheme, but it didn't really make it stand out by any means. Most of the details were left green and unpainted, the teeth, claws, and texture detail on the crests (a personal preference that last one), leaving details unpainted is kind of a pet peeve of mine.

Originality 2/5
I'm ignoring the fact that Safari themselves have reused this model more times than I'd care to count, but even still. At first it may not seem to be a direct copy of anything, that bland color scheme isn't per-se, but as I said its nothing new or special. The pose itself has some eery similarities to a comparatively more obscure figure, the Battat dilophosaurus.

Final Verdict 3/5
A sound little figure, I don't recommend going out looking for it, but if you stumble a crossed it, I recommend it should you be looking for some smaller figures. Makes a nice companion figure to the Battat mentioned earlier, or the comparably sized JP dilophosaurus hatch lings.

here it is compared to the Battat counterpart

and for scale here it is compared to the some Jurassic Park counterparts (I generally use JP figures as a starting point for comparing the scales of figures)

(Despite not having many) I managed to find a human figure relatively to scale (I don't know much about it, just its Star Wars)

Customization
I only did some very basic work with this repaint, I added some black gloss to the claws, did a basic white rub-away on the teeth. Then added metallic blue to the outer crests, with a metallic purple rub-away on top.

I was a tad too generous perhaps with the feathers on compsognathus, I was trying to make it cute
pom-pom crest, I don't know why >_<
