Another Yoshi rep?

He. And Kirby isn't that important and yet they added two more characters in Brawl

Please do not dwell onto the Birdo gender argument.

Don't compare Yoshi to Kirby. Kirby is miles more important than the Yoshi series (since the Yoshi series is just a spin-off of the Mario series) and Meta Knight and King Dedede is deserved.

Donkey Kong is also a spin-off

Kirby is one of Nintendo largest franchises hell it's almost as popular (in terms of sales which fun fact are the only thing that matters) as the legend of zelda (I think it's there 4th most popular franchise)

If using a strict condition, only the four factual SMB "protagonists" can be in. But if you mean the others, I don't think only Wario and Yoshi can be in since there are other main characters important as well.

Some examples I can think, Rosalina is for short history, Pauline is for unclear position.

Yoshi and Wario are not in because of their importance in the Mario series, they're in because of their importance in their own series.

So if a Mario character gets in, it has to have importance in either the main Mario games, the Donkey Kong games, the Yoshi games, or the Wario games, and Birdo isn't important in any of those series. The only role he's been given in any of those was as a mini-boss in Super Mario Bros. 2. Other than that, he's only been seen in the sports games, party games, kart games, and RPG games. So unless we have Birdo and Waluigi as representatives of the sports games, there's simply no place for them.

Technically this belong to the topic of the whole Marioverse, if not inside the Yoshi games.

In a narrow sense, compared to DK series which have the seperate history from Mario titles, Warioware and Yoshi story (also the prequel of Mario story) are extended after Yoshi and Wario formally joined the Mario members.
What we actually mean "main characters" are according to the overall story settings, not those who have games spots. As a premise, this could come out why the staff don't give every character a subseries game. This also applies to SMB games that Peach's other friends never come to rescue her.
