No, I fell twice (one in Piranha Plant Slide, next in Maka Wuhu). And I still got a three star rating.

Oh. Still, you'd think that stuff like that would immediately drop your final ranking.
 
It doesn't. That's how lenient the ranking is. The only times I get double stars is that if I stay behind 3rd for too long.

That can happen when item abuse comes to play.
 
True, but either I'm too far ahead or I catch up quickly. 100cc is my default difficulty.

Well, once you've star ranked all the GPs, all that you can do is do multiple 50cc races so that you'd have an easier time racking up coins. By doing that, you'd hope to finish up unlocking all the non-golden kart parts.

Gold Standard, Gold Tires, and Gold Glider.

Gold Standard: Earn 10000 VR, or collect 20000 coins.
Gold Tires: Star rank every cup for every engine class, or collect 15000 coins.
Gold Glider: StreetPass 100 people, or collect 10000 coins.
