Well it is difficult to watch both screens at the same time. The touch screen, after all, can warn you, whenever a Red Shell or a Spiny Shell is on your tail.

yeah, but you can save yourself from getting hit by it if you watch the touch screen

you see someone just got a spiny shell,
then you quickly go behind the 2nd place person (unless if your a long ways away)

same with the red shells,
if your in front of the person who has a red shell,
wait until they have it behind their kart ready to fire,
then get right behind them (of course, to the left or right of them)


which, with my experience (i unlocked all the characters, and beat every cup in 1st place except mirror on sunday)
it has helped me by hiding behind others,
then they get hit and i take a big lead
just like in MarioKartWii i'm miles in front of the 2nd place person most of the time so when they get red/spiny shells,
i got no protection :(
