I fully expect this movie to be a bloated mess of stuff where the plot is extremely thin and mostly an excuse for set pieces.

The real answer is not to think about it as they'll make up whatever for the sake of the current scenario.

Well their shtick is that they are like koopas but immune to fireballs. Since Fire Mario is not as prevalent in the 3D games that would make it mostly redundant.
Couldn't care either way. Remakes hold little interest to me unless its a bad or meh thing with a good idea and whenever I play one of those spin offs I usually just play as Mario or Bowser so the rest of the roster I largely don't care about.
I mean he rarely did anything but stand around and worry, which toads already did anyway. He was just more british about it. And this is coming from someone who likes Toadsworth.
Plus Kammy Koopa was a redundant character, she serves no purpose at all.

Sure but it's not much for historical precedent when other series already did that. Like I said, Pac-man was milking the shit out of that stuff when pac-man fever was in full bloom.
I mean, "using different characters in different kinds of ways" isn't exactly a new or innovative concept. Franchising existed long before video games even existed. Heck even in video games Pac-man was doing that before Mario did.
There aren't many Mario games that are super significant. There are a lot of great games in the franchise yes but the actual important ones going by the descriptors given is very small.
Basically like, DK the arcade game, SMB1, and I guess SM64 for it's major innovations to 3D gaming.
I just want to point out that if you are using sonic as an example to be FOR stories in Mario platformers I'd look for a better example because most sonic stories are pretty awful.
