What's your take on DK Jr and the cartoon show?

Should they return?

  • I think none of them fit in modern canon enymore

  • DK Jr may return but Bones and the show cannot fit in

  • Bones may return, but not the case for DK Jr.

  • I think DK Jr, Bones and the show all need a comeback.

I feel like comparing to the 1989 Super Mario Show, the Supercade era especially the DK Jr segment is really rarely discussed. So I'd like to know what's people's take on it.

But putting down my glasses of nogstalia, I must say this show has too many problems going on, mainly ever since building structure.

*The whole show is about sperating DK Jr from DK and want to give a show that focuses on him which is fine, but the two segments don't really correlate to each other. DK never mentions his son and misses him in his segment, while DK Jr never gives more details about his relationship with father. I think the shows would work very well if the plot shows family bond much more often.

**Also on that basis, DK Jr's segment should visit every place DK has been to and have him find useful clues. Otherwise, DK Jr's jouney feels very pointless and aimless, despite he is such a smart person

*DK Jr can speak English for no good reason especially when his father doesn't.

*Bones Bailey lacks enough character and personality as an original character. I know the show tried to do some human companion troupe, but DK Jr is too useful in all ways that the writers never want to give Bones any ability to complement DK Jr, not to mention the moments Bones is used as a tool to cause more obstacles.

**For some reason I think Stanley should had been in Bones seat for both being a canon game character and having own personality and abilities.

**So since the show features Bones and DK Jr, it really needed to focus on the relationship of the two. DK' segment works better since the writer knows DK's relationship with Mario and Pauline well, but when it comes to Bones and DK Jr's friendship, the story doesn't give it enough sparkle for people to remember, unlike Sonic series which made a couple of successful cases about human protagonist insertion, because Sonic did have some sparkle with Chris, Elise and Tom.

*DK Jr naturally appearing in human town is really awkward. While DK always manages to disguise as a human or a pet to prevent capture in his segment, nobody around DK Jr wants to capture him and that doesn't make sense on the same basis, especially DK Jr is objectively more valuable than his father.

**On that basis, I think Bones would had been a very useful character if his purpose is to be DK Jr's custodian, pretending that DK Jr is his pet, being the bridge between DK Jr and other human, and hiding the fact he can speak human language.

*As for the chapters, both DK and DK Jr segements poorly portrayed USA as the nation of sin (I mean, literally). Not saying DK Jr cannot be crime dealer, but in most times such plot is too generic and they don't need DK Jr to be the main protagonist for these stories (especially the superboy story, if anyone remember that episode). It would had been more correlevant if all the crimes relate to animal capture and DK Jr guesses his father is involved.

Of course, I don't think the entire show concept is bad, but mostly because it was so early that there was no Mario Universe to build on, and the cartoon shows didn't have enough talents to make it work. In today, we have a more concrete concept of Brooklyn and Mushroom World, even for human companion show we have Detective Pikachu. I think things might be different if it is planned today.

Sure, since the DK series has been rebooted and DK Jr doesn't exist in the current Country settings, DK Jr needs a new identity in order to return. Now given that Pauline and early DK arcade settings return and fit in modern canon, do you think the DK Jr, his show settings and Bones Bailey can also do the same?

It honestly makes more sense for Cranky Kong to be the dad of the current Donkey Kong and throwing Junior in the middle of that was somewhat weird. If Junior comes back, he should be the son of the current Donkey Kong lik Bowser and Bowser Jr's existence

him even having a chance of fitting in if he did.
I don't agree. He is generic enough to work as a background sidewalker like Giuseppe, somehow he is easier to deal with than DK Jr.

I am sure that has been entirely denied by the modern prologue where old Cranky and Mario just made their first encounter, mostly everything about the arcade era setting has been considered as non-existing after reboot for DKC Even when it comes to DK's youth alterego Baby DK is the one in the present day.

As I said above, DK Jr and Bones require brand new identities to return like Pauline did as their old selves don't exist anymore.

I always like to reference Bones as an obscure character no one cares about and pretend he was bigger than he was.
