2018 / Suggestions for next year
« on: August 17, 2018, 09:31:34 PM »
In a continuous effort to improve, please tell us things that could be changed, or new ideas, new awards, nominees, what worked, what didn't work, anything, we will look over everything posted in here.

I'll start:

*Fix poll sorter so "Game" isn't used in every table for things that aren't games; Nominee? Entry?
*M8 Retro/Modern 2D Promotional Artwork style?
*Switch F11 Biggest Missed Opportunity into something like Biggest Disappointment so the write-ins can be more open and valid, or just remove it entirely?
*Change up F9 Worst Direction of Series because it's becoming too nuanced for an award that forces generalization?
*Merge Tanooki Suit and Super Leaf (3D games)?
*M10 Favorite Song - Allow instrumental songs? Clarify name? New award to replace Sound Design?

Also general reminder to everyone that while we do our best to prevent it, typos and mistakes happen.  I like to look at how we've moved from having errors such as how entire results would be incorrect in the results list, numbers wouldn't add up, things in the wrong place, duplicate entries that weren't merged, things that don't exist, etc., and instead have moved to maybe a grand total of 3 typos that were just one missing letter or something not capitalized when it should be or vice versa.  There's not really much that can be done to prevent human error beyond evolving to mechanisms immune to fatigue, so let's keep it focused on things we can change. :)

2018 / Super Mario Odyssey Scavenger Hunt - All done!
« on: August 03, 2018, 03:13:38 PM »
Super Mario Odyssey Scavenger Hunt

General Info:

  • No sign-up required!  You will automatically be added to the player list by participating.
  • Below is a list of objectives, with clues ranging from words, phrases, riddles, references, puns, whichever. Your job for each objective is to provide a picture from the world of Super Mario Odyssey that you believe fits the clue. The correct answer is usually a combination of several elements, like a specific location, a pose or action, a particular enemy or npc, or a costume.
  • Objectives that require the inclusion of a specific costume will be marked with an asterisk symbol (*)
  • While we have a definite answer for every objective in mind, it is possible you might find an answer that fits the clues provided in a different way. Such answers may also receive points depending on how well they fit, so don’t be afraid to get creative!
  • To complete the full scavenger hunt you will require to have access to all Kingdoms. However, we will not bar you from participating if you don't meet these requirements. Feel free to answer as many objectives as you can.
Rules:

This game will be divided into two phases, each spanning 10 days.

- Phase One - August 10th - 19th
August 10, 2018, 04:00:00 PM - August 19, 2018, 04:00:00 PM

- Phase Two - August 21st - 30th
August 21, 2018, 04:00:00 PM - August 30, 2018, 04:00:00 PM

At the beginning of phase 1, a list of objectives will be released that each require a certain picture to be taken, as well as a clue for each of them. The objectives are divided by Kingdom and each have a label associated with them (like "Cascade A", "Sand D", "Lost F", etc). Please use this numbering system when submitting your guesses.

Once you have taken your pictures, please privately send them to us. We ask you to use the forum’s PM system to do this, though the content of said message is up to you. You may post your pictures as links into the message directly, or link to a google document or imgur gallery, or whatever else you find convenient. Please don’t put your pictures into IMG tags though, as that will flood our inboxes with pictures.

Once phase 2 arrives, an additional clue will be released for each objective. These are hints that further specify the pictures you need to take. If you have not submitted a correct guess in phase 1, you will get a new chance here by putting the clues from phase 1 and phase 2 together and figure out the picture that is needed. If you already guessed correctly in phase 1, you will be informed of that at this time.

At the end of phase 2, we evaluate all guesses and tally your points. Points are awarded based on the number of correct guesses, during which phase a guess was submitted, and various other factors (see "Tokens" for more info). Points will be used to determine a ranking, and tokens will be paid out according to that ranking.

Please note that you can only send one picture per objective during each phase. The first picture you send counts. If you feel that you’ve made a mistake, you get one do-over per objective (spanning both phases of the game, so if you use your do-over in phase 1, you can’t use it again in phase 2). If you use the do-over, we will ignore the first picture you sent and you can send a different one. Note that if your erased picture was the correct answer, you will NOT get partial points for it.

Please send your guesses to Anton, Edo, and 2257.

*All images must be your own!  If we find out that you are using someone else’s images, some of your guesses may be voided, or, depending on the scale of this infraction, you may be disqualified outright.

Tokens:

Players compete for points, which at the end of the game will be used to construct a leaderboard. Tokens will be paid out according to your rank on said leaderboard, NOT your number of points. You will receive the same amount of tokens, whether you reach first place with a margin of 3000 or a margin of 3. This also means leaking your correct guesses to others will potentially hurt your rank and put you at a disadvantage.

Point system (per objective):

Phase 1:
Correct guess:
Partially correct guess:
First correct guess:

Phase 2:
Correct guess:
Partially correct guess:

End:
Exclusivity bonus:
Didn’t use do-over:

200 points
150 points
50 points

100 points
75 points

100 / # of correct answers
10 points

For the first correct guess bonus, we will update the list below to keep a live reflection of whether a clue has already been guessed.

The more people who play, the bigger the pot will be, and the more tokens you could possibly earn!

How to get your images off your Switch:

*Publish to Facebook
-As long as you can make them private, then just provide us with the direct image URLs, or transfer them from Facebook to Imgur

*Publish to Twitter
-As long as you can make them private, then just provide us with the direct image URLs, or transfer them from Facebook to Imgur

*microSD
-Using this, you will need to then upload the images to an image sharing service, such as Imgur, to then provide us with links to see them

*Phone or Camera
-Similar to the microSD method, but is handy if you don’t have a microSD slot, SD card slot, or microSD to SD adapter.  Just take as best of a photo of your Switch screen as you can and then transfer your images to your PC via a USB cable, microSD, SD, or upload directly to an image sharing service like Imgur if you’re using a smartphone

For more detailed information, here’s a good article that explains more!

Example:

The list of objectives might look something like this:

Quote
Sand Kingdom

Sand A - (Clue 1: "Siesta")
Sand B - (Clue 1: "Hit-and-Run")
Sand C (...)

Your answer might then be this:

Quote
Sand Kingdom

Sand A: https://i.imgur.com/wi5hdsn.jpg
Sand B: https://i.imgur.com/0SeEd9h.jpg
Sand C (...)

Do note that the Kingdom name and objective identifier are both included!

If there are absolutely any questions, comments, needs for explanation, compliments, credit card info, anything, please feel free to ask us here in this thread, or PM us if it must be private!

2018 / Prizes -- Closed
« on: July 20, 2018, 03:48:02 PM »
Prize order + token list

Item Limits:
-You are allowed to pick 1 big prize and 1 small prize, or 0 big prizes and up to 2 small prizes, with small prizes being TF2 items, low-cost dlc, emoticons, and trading card sets, and big prizes being everything else (digital games, shop points, OW boxes).  Exceptions may be granted in specific circumstances.  Edit: There are currently no small prizes so the process is simply 1 prize selection per turn!
-Buying two of the same item is not allowed.

Your Steam storage contacts are The Mushroom Vault, a shared account used by awards staff to distribute prizes, and PsychoKamek.  Otherwise, all other prizes/codes are stored by Anton or by the donor.

Everyone will have 24 12 hours after the last person has selected their prize(s) to choose their own until they are skipped.  After everyone takes their turn once, the list will start again from the beginning until all prizes or tokens are exhausted, or everyone is done.
*While we may contact people individually, we are not responsible for doing so.  If you miss your turn and are skipped, you must wait until the next cycle.
*Obvious inactive people will either be skipped entirely or given less time; this will be taken as it goes.  This is so it doesn't take 6 years to get through the list.
**If you've been assumed inactive and skipped, but show up at some point, we may decide to let you go next.
*People are not allowed to officially reserve prizes for themselves, but some may allow it as a courtesy.  No one is bound to this.
**If you know you're going to be away/inactive during the time you would be selecting a prize, you can provide a few options for us to select on your behalf and we'll do our best to accommodate.
*If you know your turn is next, but Anton or Turb haven't announced who's next yet (by factor of them not being online at the moment, etc.), feel free to post your selection and continue onward with the list for when we can get back to address them.
*It's possible during the course of distribution that some prizes may become unavailable, or more prizes will be added.  We will do our best to make these changes as fair as possible.

2018 / GUESS THE RESULTS 2018
« on: July 01, 2018, 03:51:09 PM »

Rules:

*You do not have to have voted to participate. You can also participate if you are presenting award(s), see farther down. You also don't have to attend the ceremonies, as we will calculate all of the results of this beforehand.

*You can do Mario, Fail, and/or Community, any single one, combo of two, or all three. There will be four achievements - highest score in each one, and highest combined total (must do all three to qualify for this one, of course).

*You will have a chance to gain up to 15 points per award by guessing the Top 3 (gold, silver, bronze) nominees. Therefore, the max score is 450 for Mario, 225 for Fail, 225 for Community, and 900 total (the chances of acing any set is very low). You can get full credit for getting a nominee in the right spot, partial credit for getting a nominee that is in the Top 3 but in the wrong spot, or no credit for picking a nominee not in the Top 3 at all:
--Gold Exacta: 5 points
--Silver Exacta: 3 points
--Bronze Exacta: 2 points
--Any Spot: 1 point
--Miss: 0 points
--Trifecta (triple exacta): +5 points, therefore 5 + 3 + 2 + 5 = 15.

*I'll post an example so the meaning is clear, as well as show some intricacies so you can strategize. If the Top 3 of award M9001 is A, B, and C, then:
--C, B, D: C is in the top 3, but it is put as gold instead of bronze: 1 point. B is an exacta 3 points, D is nowhere to be found, 0 points. Total: 4
--C, D, A: Two spots are mixed up, but they still only count as 1 point each. Total: 2
--A, E, F: Salvaging gold can make a mess a decent amount. Total: 5
--C, E, F: You don't want to do this. Total: 1
--D, B, C: As close to a trifecta as this is, that miss is 0 instead of what would have been 5+5 points. Total: 5
--C, A, B: Getting the right three nominees isn't enough if they're all mixed up. Total: 3
--B, A, C: Again, this is pretty close to a trifecta, but... Total: 4
--As you should see, putting a gold in the wrong spot costs you more points (4) than a bronze (1), and that a trifecta is appropriately hard to earn and fairly easy to give up.

Here is the full list.  If you submit a red nominee, you didn't read the document.

*For any award you are presenting, you will receive a free 5 points.  If you are presenting an award you can finalize your votes before you get the results (around July 17th-19th) to guarantee your gamble instead of the automatic 5 points.  Do not guess the results of an award after you have received the results for it.  We know you are cheating.

*Submit your entries here - you are free to edit them until right before the ceremonies begin. Look at other people's submissions if you want, but second-guessing has just as great a chance to add to your points as much as subtracting them! Keeping each award to one line would be appreciated, just putting "A#: A, B, C" will be read as gold, silver, bronze across the line.

Off-subject Discussion / Mood
« on: June 16, 2018, 01:24:20 AM »
The rules are simple: post a picture that represents how you are feeling right now.  It can be a vibe, it can be what you're doing, it can be whatever speaks of your essence.  No words, no explanation, the more abstract the better.  Images with words may be allowed so long as they're not literal, but they're on thin ice.

Update: I've broken the rules.  Hyperspecific explanations using an obscure image is ok.  Words are now allowed, the 1st Amendment is alive and well.

I'll start.

2018 / Art Contest -- Results up!
« on: May 26, 2018, 08:19:25 PM »
"Making good wine is a skill; making fine wine is an art."
-Robert Mondavi

Results!

Info:
*One (1) entry per individual.
*Winners will be selected with a public vote using Polldaddy polls linked both here and in The 'Shroom
*The topic is very general; Mario- and community-themed works
*All kinds of art will be accepted (Drawings both computer and traditional, short comics, gifs, photos, short videos, songs, anything that's art)
*Tokens will be awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each skill category, as well as for general participation.

Submissions:
Please send all submissions to me starting June 1st - July 14th, whether it's my inbox here, or query on chat, so long as it's private.  If you are signed up, the deadline can be extended up until July 20th for you as I'd already know to be expecting it.

Voting will take place July 21st - August 11th, and polls will be located both within this thread and in a special 'Shroom section in July's issue.

Please don't post entries within this thread!!

Sign-ups:
Sign-ups aren't necessary but they really help see how many people there will be and create a balanced contest.  There will be 3 skill tiers with separate votes (beginner, amateur, and experienced) so if you sign up please select which one you feel you fit into.  If one tier ends up barren while another is overpopulated I may use Director's discretion and move people around, but I will certainly try to avoid this as much as possible.  Also, people who do not provide a tier to be placed into will automatically go into amateur until otherwise proven or stated, and people are also free to change their position.

Beginner
Hooded Pitohui
Luigi 64DD
Yoshi the SSM
Amateur
Alex95
BBQ Turtle
Meta Knight
Koops
Neptune
Turb
winstein
Experienced
Baby Luigi
The Pyro Guy
Anton
Fawfulthegreat64

If there are any questions, comments, concerns, please post them in this thread.  If you think there's a better way to run this contest than how I did it last year, please tell me!

Check out last year's contest and results!

Hey everyone click this and share songs that you think are cool

In the top left you can toggle on/off Slow, Fast, and Weird.  Then just click a decade and a country and a song will play for you!  There's some other features, but I haven't messed around with those yet.

New year, new nominees, so check out last years' presentations where I've painstakingly linked to every single presentation for easy reference.

Just go and lob every single presentation that you liked and feel should be included in this award, and at a later date I'll compile them all into a giant poll to select 15-18 from.

Awards Staff / M28 Favorite Game Setting

Quote from: Current nominees
Favorite Game Setting (Mushroom Kingdom (SMB), Mushroom Kingdom (PM), Super Mario RPG World, Dinosaur Land, Yoshi's Island, Isle Delfino, Beanbean Kingdom, Rogueport & surrounding areas, Flipside & Flopside, Bowser's Castle, Sarasaland, Donkey Kong Island, Sprixie Kingdom, Comet Observatory & Galaxies, Pi'illo Island, Prism Island)

Quote
M28 - Favorite Game Setting - The game with the best setting overall. Focus is placed on the entirety of the setting as a whole, rather than just individual areas.

This thread is being made because it's a bit confusing/difficult figuring out how to add Super Mario Odyssey stuff to M28.  To be consistent with nominees already in this award, the entire game should be added as one entity, but there's also a feeling that each Kingdom has a unique enough feel.

There's several ways we can approach this, including a complete rework, redefinition, rephrasing nominees, simply double checking if the nominees we have are all valid with the definition, or just doing nothing.

Awards Staff / New Award Idea Incubator
« on: March 09, 2018, 11:17:28 PM »
At the moment of posting this, M23 and M24 are vacant, and potentially the removal of M10 Favorite Partner Developer.  There is interest in filling them with Odyssey-themed awards such as Captures and Outfits, as well as ones to represent Songs, DK levels, Microgames, etc.

Please suggest any idea you have and potential nominees if possible, and as time goes on we'll see if any of them pan out as good replacements

Awards Staff / M9 Favorite DLC rework
« on: March 09, 2018, 11:08:08 PM »
There is interest in expanding the definition of M9 Favorite DLC into including various updates and expansions, which would mean renaming the award as well.  This has been a topic for the last few years as Nintendo has been playing with the idea of DLC and bonus content, but it seems they are providing more updates and port expansions than they are formal DLC.

Please use this topic to further discuss a new name for the award as well as new options for nominees.  It currently stands at:
Quote
Favorite DLC (The Legend of Zelda × Mario Kart 8, Animal Crossing × Mario Kart 8, Mercedes-Benz × Mario Kart 8, New Super Luigi U, Peach's Castle stage (SSB4), Super Mario Maker stage (SSB4), Super Mario Mash-Up Pack (Minecraft))

Awards Staff / Award Definitions
« on: March 09, 2018, 11:00:35 PM »
I would like for us to create a full set of definitions for each award so us and future Committees are able to reference them when selecting nominees.  This has been an issue several times over the years with different people viewing the same award in different ways, causing us to devote large chunks of time to debating what the award is even for.  In this post I will keep a running list for them as we create the definitions.  Feel free to make any and all suggestions and debate over these.

Mario Awards XI

M1 - Best Sound Design - The game that overall sounds the best. A significant deciding factor is the game's soundtrack, but it also includes skillful and appropriate use of sound effects, ambience, and (if present) quality of voice acting.

M2 - Favorite Mario Kart Game - The best game of the Mario Kart series.

M3 - Favorite Mario Platformer - The best game featuring the core 2D or 3D Mario gameplay without too many significant deviations. The selection encompasses games which focus on the use of skillful jumping to traverse obstacle courses and/or sandboxes to reach the objective, often while collecting coins and helpful powerups along the way.

M4 - Favorite Mario Kart Course - The best race course featured in one or more Mario Kart games. This does not include battle courses.

M5 - Favorite ____ Game - The best game of the ____ spin-off series.

M6 - Favorite ____ Character - The best character of the ____ spin-off series.

M7 - Favorite ____ Level - The best level of the ____ spin-off series.

M8 - Favorite Art Style - The best visual style used in Mario media. This features prominently used, distinct, and recognizable art styles, but does not include one-off styles. A focus is placed on overall aesthetics over deviations due to hardware limitations (for example: SM64 looks different from SMG, but this seems to be a product of hardware limitations rather than artistic choice. Promotional renderings of the game show Mario in the familiar main series style. Therefore, we do not recognize SM64 as its own art style).

M9 - Favorite Add-on Content - The best Mario-relevant software package that adds new content to a game. To qualify, the content must be non-essential for the core game and add one or more distinct, recognizable elements to it. This does not include minor patches, code updates, or bug fixes.

M10 - Favorite Song - The best music track from a Mario or Mario spin-off game featuring intelligible lyrics.

M11 - Favorite Major Character - The best recurring Mario series character prominently featured in a main role.

M12 - Favorite Supporting Character - The best Mario series or Mario spin-off series character who is part of the support cast. This includes recurring minor characters, as well as major characters that only appeared in one game, or exclusively appear in spin-offs.

M13 - Favorite Level Theme - The best overall environmental theme of a level.

M14 - Favorite Species - The best species that characters in the Mario series can belong to. To qualify, there must be more than one representative of said species present throughout the series.

M15 - Hardest Boss - The most difficult boss fight featured in a Mario or Mario spin-off game. This includes final bosses, secret bosses, and bosses that are difficult because of additional win conditions.

M16 - Favorite Item - The most interesting, useful, or otherwise superior item or power-up available in the Mario series.

M17 - Favorite Mario RPG - The best Mario role-playing-game.

M18 - Favorite Mario Party Game - The best game of the Mario Party series.

M19 - Favorite Actor - The fan-favorite actor who appeared in Mario-related media. This includes both live-action performances and voice-acting.

M20 - Favorite Sports Game - The best sports-themed Mario spin-off game. Mario Kart titles have been excluded from this award because they already possess a dedicated award to themselves.

M21 - Favorite Puzzle Game - The best Mario spin-off game which primarily focuses on on the completion of puzzles and places emphasis on the use of logic over pure dexterity. This includes puzzle-platformers.

M22 - Favorite Battle Course - The best dedicated battle course featured in one or more Mario Kart games.

M23 - Favorite Capture - The best controllable creature that can be captured with Cappy in Super Mario Odyssey. Deciding factors include their moveset, breadth of options, how well the game used them, as well as how enjoyable they are to control overall.

M24 - (to be decided iirc) -

M25 - Favorite 2D Mario Level - The best level found in a Mario sidescroller. This only includes nominees from the main Mario games. Levels from the Donkey Kong, Wario, and Yoshi spin-off series have been excluded.

M26 - Favorite 3D Mario Level - The best level found in a 3D Mario game. This only includes nominees from the main Mario games. Levels from the Donkey Kong, Wario, and Yoshi spin-off series have been excluded.

M27 - Favorite Boss Battle - The best boss battle found in a Mario or Mario spin-off game.

M28 - Favorite Game Setting - The game with the best setting overall. Focus is placed on the entirety of the setting as a whole, rather than just individual areas.

M29 - Favorite Classic Game (GCN/GBA and older) - The best game among every Mario title released for the Nintendo Gamecube and older (for console games), and the Gameboy Advance and older (for handheld games).

M30 - Favorite Modern Game (Wii/DS and newer) - The best game among every Mario title released for the Nintendo Wii and newer (for console games), and the Nintendo DS and newer (for handheld games).
