It's no mystery the show started to decline after Poof, took a huge fall with the talking dog, then was utterly ruined with no chance of recovery on its final season with Chloe.

But here's the thing, it wasn't Chloe or anything surrounding her that ruined the show.
It was the removal of diverse cast (Chester, AJ, Wandisimo, Trixie, Veronica, those two popular boys, Crimson Chin).
It was Crocker becoming the antagonist with the same method every episode.
It was Timmy unlearning all the moral lessons of his previous seasons, becoming a one-dimensional selfish brat.
It was transphobia, incest jokes, and misunderstanding technology boomer humor.
It's devastating really, what the heck happened?

Nickelodeon happened.

Money happened.

Butch Hartman happened.

I'm just going to take a second to talk about like the only good thing with the reboot.

I think it's kinda neat that they're giving Drake Bell (reprising his role as Timmy from the live action Fairly Odd movies) a second chance after his allegations. I mean, I think it helped that he owned up to it and was genuinely remorseful about what he did, it's not often that people like that get a second chance.

???????????

Drake Bell isn't playing Timmy Turner in this sequel series. Like at all.

It's an actor named Caleb Pierce who's playing the role.

And as an aside, they ain't allegations: if the dude pleaded guilty for the charges and was found guilty for the charges and sentenced for them. They ain't allegations, they happened and the dude is a scumbag. (And even if he didn't do this shit, I'd still call him a scumbag because of his promotion of NFTs tbh)

Anyways to give my actual thoughts on this sequel/reboot:
Who is this for? I mean obviously it's for children but is The Fairly Oddparents really that hot a property with today's kids? (It seriously feels like the cartoon ended ages ago but it was only 2017, just five years ago)

It honestly feels like Nickelodeon wanted to make one of their generic kidcoms for Paramount+ but then decided to just shoehorn in FOP because 'people remember that, right? And they used to like it. Maybe we can get some nostalgia viewers and parents who watched the original cartoon will watch the new show with their kids'.

Also goddamn does Daran Norris sound like he doesn't care about this anymore.

For me, I think the Fairly Oddparents took a writing hit at around Season 5, just before Poof. What I recall strongly about that season is some of the poorly paced episodes (Presto Change-O for example literally begins with Timmy asking to be bodyswapped, with literally no build up whatsoever), some episodes being far too heavily reliant on running gags and are just plain not too funny (Something's Fishy, Nega-Timmy, Back to the Norm), heavily flanderized characters (such as Timmy the Barbarian having Wanda literally being a nagger). It's also home to the infamous It's a Wishful Life and Timmy's 2D House of Horror, both atrocious episodes) but the episode that stood out to me the most as a testament of its writing quality was Timmy TV. I don't exactly remember the plot of that episode, but there was a dialogue that went something like this:

Timmy: You can't get rid of my godparents!
Wanda: Oh did you hear that? He really loves us!
Timmy: I mean, who else will poof my screen up for me all the time?

I mean wow. My god. This piece of dialogue was absolutely unnecessary, unfunny, and mean-spirited, and it's completely out of character for Timmy to say that. That one moment was like, yeah this show definitely dropped in quality somehow. Season 5 does have a lot of great episodes such as Yoo Doo!, The Good Ol' Days, Just Desserts, Future Lost, and the specials, but the bad episodes it has shines a spotlight on what's to come for the show and it'll only get worse.

I've tried giving Season 6 onward a chance. I've tried to rewatch episodes. Poof wasn't really the problem though he did contributed to some. The pacing became hyperactive, they try to force jokes and running gags which aren't all that funny to begin with (I think the only time I laughed at a running gag was Cheese & Crocker's Crocker trying to be Spider Man and him crashing into a wall and saying "ah I'll take the bus" and the rock stuff in "Land Before Timmy"), and the extremified shifts of personality of the main characters (Timmy becoming more selfish and impulsive, Cosmo being even dumber and trying super hard to be funny, and Wanda just berating Cosmo for no reason, as if she has no chemistry with him anymore, but is still otherwise the "most" tolerable of the personality changes the most as she's still the straight one who is smart). There are still wholesome moments to be found here and there such as Emergency Wish's family photo near the end of the episode and maybe still some funny stuff such as "Open Wide and Say Auugh" with that really whacked out hospital (which is also kinda forced). And Wishology is still good.

And I haven't watched anything much past that. Might have seen some episodes but none of them stood out to me, except for Lights Out which is a special kind of terrible. I didn't watch a single episode of Sparky or Chloe but the show is pretty much unsalvageable at that point, Season 10 probably being, by far, the worst season of the Fairly Oddparents, as I've seen some reviewers take on some season 10 episodes, almost all of them universally terrible.

I haven't watched the movies either but I feel the same issues that started springing up in, say, Season 6 are present here.

So, this leads to my opinion of the trailer.

Like wow, this looks even cheaper than the Drake Bell trilogy. Cosmo and Wanda are literally just 2D cartoon images pasted on top of the footage. They have this particular art style for a reason, and all of that cartoon aesthetic gets thrown out the window when you just put them in live action like this. At least in the movie trilogy, they're in 3D, so they look like they sorta fit in the world, their own cartoon aesthetic notwithstanding. The fairies look like they just don't belong and are thrown in because, hey, I guess Fairly Oddparents used to be popular, remember when it was good and it used to be funny? The trailer also showed typical weak Fairly Oddparent humor such as, of course, the toilet joke because hahaha human waste is funny. I think this would probably written even worse than the triology because this honestly looks like a generic teen sitcom but with Cosmo and Wanda in it and I don't have high hopes for it. I didn't have high hopes for the show from the beginning but man I didn't expect them to be THIS cheap about it. I do like the updated cartoon designs of the fairies, noticeably the introduction of shading, but...that's it? Would have been better if it was animated but that show honestly needs time to rest now, seriously.

I've also just realized that Poof was nowhere to be seen here. I guess they really want to try hard to forget Poof happened. Same with Sparky (who didn't appear in Season 10 at all) and Chloe.

THAT'S the good thing. I don't want people with so this much baggage keep their career. That being said, I also want to see Butch Hartmann thrown forcibly off his career too. He's a scam artist and a deep-end religious whacko who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near kids.

My expectations for the reboot were pretty gutter bottom. The last episodes, from a few clips I've seen, had some of the worst writing for a cartoon I've ever seen. Like the screenplay, written in a session in a bathroom. It has the same vibe of me going "hey today is 'start the plot moving' day, now I'm going to do incomprehensible thing to celebrate day like stuff myself into a refrigerator, which grows robotic legs because I retooled it for last years 'start the plot moving' day", and I'm going to get into trouble" and then Timmy wishes holidays never existed or something.

Anyways to give my actual thoughts on this sequel/reboot:

I don't think the reboot is really going to succeed, and yeah, I think a lot of people who grew up with Fairly Oddparents are completely burnt out with the current series. I like to see a return to form, yeah, but this ain't it.

transphobia

You know, Fairly Oddparents at one point does actually have jokes and morals that question gender norms, even if it was the result of 00's era writing for kids. In "Miss Dimmsdale", Timmy's dad wins the prize despite it being a "MISS Dimmsdale contest", with his dad saying "Well that's a MISStake! I'm going to prove that men can be just as beautiful as women!" (though he was framed as crazy...which yeah is the byproduct of its age) and when he does win the prize, the crowd cheers him on unironically and give tremendous support for him. Then there's "Who's Your Daddy?", where Timmy's mom wins the Squirrely Scout Camp award despite being a men's only thing, with Timmy saying, "sometimes the best dad can be your mom". And who could forgot "The Boy Who Would Be Queen", with Trixie outright saying "If more boys do girl stuff then more girls can do boy stuff."

Even in Season 10 episode, Cosmo was like "Poof, you're home! And you're a girl!" indicating that Cosmo still loves Poof even if he identifies a girl, and while that was unintentional at the writer's part, that's really the reaction any transpeople want, right?

The Valentine's Day special, "Love Struck" is actually pretty damn bad, however, and that was a Season 3 episode, the season's worst episode without a doubt. The gender stereotypes they force upon is bad, and its romantic assertion that people need a partner of the opposite sex to be happy or something is terribly, terribly outdated, and I think the episode just aged for the worse over time. That's also on top of the fact that Tootie acts as a very creepy, obsessive stalker of Timmy, who Timmy clearly feels no romantic interest in and is pretty much forced to be with her because that's how Cupid decided that they were meant to be. Imagine if the genders were swapped for this scenario, where there was an obsessive boy who stalked a girl, the girl is clearly disgusted and wants to stay far away from him, and you get what I mean on why that's extremely problematic, especially when Tootie's obsession of Timmy is simply viewed as "cute". I think these types of obsessive love stalkers simply doesn't fly today, especially in light of online movements such as #metoo.

I got an ad for the reboot, and as someone who grew up without cable and doesn't even know the show: yeah this reboot is going to fail. It was said earlier but the fairies look awful just being pasted on like that, they should just leave the show alone. I'm personally quite tired of the whole 'Oh let's bring an old kids show back for no reason other than 'NoStAlGiA', because we don't want to make something new and creative!'

They didn't even include a good spin on the idea. Why are we getting again some relatively well-off kids getting fairies? Timmy Turner in the original doesn't have the most functional family, especially with a life threatening babysitter but otherwise his financial situation is pretty damn solid as well as stability of his parents' marriage.

I legit thought this was a fan-made animation but no, this is supposed to be a production quality animation and not some unpaid fan doing something in their spare time. I don't know how they managed to make the animation regress even worse than the latter episodes of Season 10 but here we are.

The script isn't terrible but the laugh tracks holy crap the laugh tracks. Why are there so many of them, towards jokes that aren't even funny? They don't even fit in here; the only time the original series even used a laugh track was when they were PARODYING sitcom-like shows (the Meatflints from Channel Chasers is the example I had in mind).

Also they REALLY need to stop rendering Timmy without teeth!

(I know the reboot supposed to show him showing his teeth afterward but why even do that animation!!??)
(How can that movie screw up his eye textures and not model his teeth...clearly taken from Cosmo's model... but they can still model his hat and clothes just fine???)

There's also these:

(that last tweet originally had Crocker and Vicky singing to each other but hey, they at least got the original actor playing Crocker here and that is like, the only part of the sitcom I've seen that I can label as "genuinely good" so far)

The Farty Oddparrots reboot seems like its literally just a string of cringe moments and crappy animation.

And this is just going off the trailer, which I found awful

Only seen a few clips of the reboot but
The laugh tracks ruin every joke that could've been slightly funny.

I'm in favor of calling the FOP reboot "The Farty OddParrots" to push it farther away from being associated with the REAL Fairly OddParents.

Keep in mind, if anyone wanted a FOP reboot, I doubt they ever wanted it to be live action

Fairly Oddparents doesn't work in live action, period. Look at the character designs, look at how the show uses animation, look at how it exaggerates, look at the very concept of it. Plus, having a real kid who is actually abused by parents and evil babysitters would be more depressing to be honest.

I'm in favor of calling the FOP reboot "The Farty OddParrots" to push it farther away from being associated with the REAL Fairly OddParents.

The problem is, even the original series had a LOT of terrible episodes mixed in, especially later seasons.

I saw the first ep of the live action and it was better than the classic's season 10 *shutters*

Season 10 is gutter bottom though. Is it better than, say, Season 6-9?

I've seen the show and the claims are...a bit heavy and exaggerated if I do say so myself.

The only time I've seen something close to incest from what I recall was the Five Days of FLARG episode from Season 5, where Timmy forgets that he had a very pretty girl named Carla tattoo him (A for Amnesia). I think the joke was that he forgot someone he finds very attractive loved him, but I think it simply went past the writers that it's bothersome how it appears to be a fully grown woman doing this to a 10 year old boy rather than an intentional attempt at making an incest joke.

About transphobia, yes, the show does have a lot of cross dressing jokes and the bending of gender roles as well as the reinforcing of it. Problem was, it's a 2000's show, that was when before LGBT+ became very apparent. As much as it does do male to female crossdressing jokes (especially in Love Struck from Season 3, which aged horrendously) the show DOES regularly poke fun at the absurdity of gender norms and likes to have men win women-only contests (such as beauty pagants) or women win men-only contests (such as the Squirrely Scouts head) as well as men running from a men's bathroom saying AAAHHH FEMALE! because they saw a woman in it (Dad dragging Mom into the men's room in Parent Hoods, which is a subversion of women screaming from seeing a man in the woman's room).

In addition, the reinforcement of gender roles, jokes about cross-dressing, etc, is not unique to the cartoon. Again, in the context of 2000s, this was probably more common in other cartoons. Remember Danny Phantom (yeah I know it's a sister show) where Danny and Tucker were unintentionally sleeping and hugging each other and Sam took a photo to try to blackmail them to help save the white gorilla? This sort of scene could be construed as homophobic though during the 2000s it seemed more like high school kids being awkward, and this was a recurrent gag in other cartoons at the time. Spongebob also made fun of cross-dressing, Rock a Bye Bivalve is one where Spongebob is portrayed as a mom for a humorous gag as well as him crossdressing as a maid as well as that one post-movie episode where Patrick cross-dresses and guys fall for him.

But my sister is right, I think Fairly Oddparents subverted it more than the other shows at the time. They're not even pretending. In the Squirrely Scouts, Timmy Turner explicitly says that "Sometimes the best dad is your mom". They also had Cosmo the one who's pregnant and giving birth. While it's probably intended to shock at first, it's not like they entirely went with how icky it is (and it's not pregnancy is pleasant to begin with); they did treat the giving birth part as a loving moment.

I'm not sure about incest jokes; what was described was implicit pedophilia. Anyhow from context I don't think it was intentional either, they just wanted a sort of absurd memory. Timmy Turner IS attracted to girls and I think it's normal at the time to depict a few boys as attracted to women (Carl from Jimmy Neutron for instance); I'm not sure if real life also has boys having a crush on their friend's moms or something and it's just a harmless reflection of real life, but it's a little weird.

spongebob used to be good too. they both suffered the exact same fate. they shouldve both ended at the movie, and the film was the exact moment they went to shit.

Bumping this cause relevant but it appears Fairly Oddparents is gonna get another reboot?
