Hammer Bro for the win! I've actually stomped him with a ground pound in SM Galaxy 2. It feels so good. They used to be real bastards and much harder in SMB and SMB lost levels because they were throwing more hammers.

And SMB2 (the JP version) was a level modification of SMB1?
 
I think Shy Guys and Birdos deserve to be on the poll.

Maybe so, but there are quite a few of them that made their way into future Mario games.
 
Bob-ombs were from SMB2
