As you all know, it's been exactly two decades (20 years) since the reboot of the Super Mario Bros. series started. Might as well make a dedicated thread for it to wish it a happy anniversary!

Happy 20th anniversary, New Super Mario Bros.!

I've always really liked New Super Mario Bros., it's the first new 2D Mario platformer in eons and I remember being hyped seeing pre-release screenshots with two player Co-op all the way back in the day.

Likely this got scrapped because the DS couldn't handle it, but they retooled it into the side Mario vs Luigi mode, which I really adored. Sis and I would spend hours on the Ice Stage just messing around in it.

I also love the climbing on the ledge parts of the mountain world, I remember my sister and I would joke that it's like Prince of Persia lol.

Also, I'll love the Blue Shell powerup forever.

Happy 20th to NSMB

I used to play it constantly to the point where mom had to take it away for the week. It was that good.
Bah bah

Only 6 more years until it's NSMBU and NSMB2's turn. Only 3 more years until it's NSMBWii's turn.

i think this was the first game i played that had toadsworth in it, funny how that turned out to be one of his most random appearances. i remember putting my super mario advance 2 cartridge in the gba slot that came in ds game boxes for some reason, and trying to make a custom corner image to add to NSMB's cover to make it look like it came with a bonus game. since at the time those two were the only 2D Mario games i'd played.

at the time i definitely got the vibe that this was SM64 if it was a 2D Mario game, but that was mostly due to it reusing so many assets from SM64DS and having abilities like triple and wall jump. when i fought Petey Piranha i recognized him from Super Princess Peach (i even remember going "hey cool it's Boss P. Plant!")

aaand now that i think about that, that must mean SPP was actually the first game i played with Toadsworth, since he was in that game, but I feel like i took notice of him for the first time in NSMB (or maybe i got NSMB first but got to Petey after playing SPP idk)

regardless, the fact that this game is 20 years old is certainly not making me feel any younger 💀

This truly was Toadsworth's most random appearance yeah. Not to mention they used his model for all the "Toads" that ran outside after the castle got hit by lightning in the opening of the game

Interestingly enough, I never grew up with the original DS. My first 2D Mario game was NSMBWii and didn't know NSMB existed until we got a 3DS. Which I guess was still the first game that introduced me to Toadsworth because Nintendo had stopped using him around the Wii era. Now that I think about it, it does seem like a pretty random appearance.

I've never played this game as I've never owned a DS before, but I heard it's really fun! What do you guys think?

I've played every single game (except U and Luigi U, but I do have U Deluxe so I technically have these two, but just not their original versions as the Wii U is the only console between the DS and Switch 2 that I don't have). I kinda miss them. Wish we could've gotten another. Or at least a dedicated level editor for them (like the fangame Super Mario Bros. X2)

Yeah, any new NSMB games will not happen I don't think. Considering that NSMB2 and NSMBU got critically and financially panned, I don't think a NSMB3 will ever happen unfortunately.

NSMB2 kinda deserved it. Not saying it's bad but it's definitely the weakest one of the four (five if you include NSLU). It wasn't really as worthy of a direct sequel to NSMBDS as the name says. NSMBU didn't deserve it though. It was a worthy direct sequel to NSMBWii and probably one of, if not, my favorite of the NSMB games. The only reason people hate it was because it was the fourth game in a series that was largely the same and the fact it releases so quickly after NSMB2 (only 3 months were between the release of NSMB2 and NSMBU). If NSMBU followed the pattern (in case you get the "pattern" I'm talking about: I mean that, before NSMBU, every 3 years a new NSMB game came out. MP had a similar pattern before MP9, where every year (or in case an MP game came out pretty late into the year, it would take 2 years) a new MP game came out) and came out in 2015 instead (and if the advertising of the Wii U), it would've probably been praised almost as much as NSMB and NSMBWii
