AWARDS COMMITTEE INTRODUCTION

  • We went through the basic duties and operation of the Awards Committee and introduced this year's Awards Committee members.
  • We conducted a successful test poll to confirm Uncle Awards is working.

ESTABLISHING ROLES
  • We discussed opportunities for members of the Awards Committee to voluntarily take on additional roles, such as Meeting Summarizer.
  • Not too important to decide on right now; members can take on roles throughout the year
  • Pitohui and Camwoodstock took notes for this session; BMFan08 expressed potential interest in summarizing this year to be assessed later

AWARDS NUMBERS
  • Broad consensus that enough energy exists to sustain ~45 awards, plus/minus 1-2.
    • Maintain split of roughly 20 Mario, 10 Fail, 15 Community.
    • 50 should be taken as a hard limit for sanity's sake, only to be considered viable in the event that there is an undeniable uptick in energy as the year goes along.
  • Keeping the awards number divisible by 5 is desirable, but not necessary if ideas shake out such that we have a few more or a few less.
  • We currently have a 5-presentation limit per person as a hard maximum with 3 main sign-ups before backups. Nobody had any problems so this is probably staying true

MISCELLANEOUS POINTERS
  • It's the 20th awards ceremony (marking 21 years of the wiki). We are looking for ways to celebrate the 20th edition of the awards themselves. Various ideas were pitched:
    • Anniversary art contributed by various users throughout the year
    • Fun With Despair will host Scribble Labs 3
    • GBA and Perch are running AKG2x2
    • Hint Toad is running an Odyssey scavenger hunt
    • A Guess the Results return is desired
    • An Awards trivia gameshow building from and refining Boo1268's concept
    • Some sort of time lapse data display showing past results changing
    • Display the polls that have only appeared once (AC mistakes/silly misses), let people vote on them unchanged, then a fanfare-less presentation of the results
    • Smasher mentioned hosting Gartic nights
    • A special 'Shroom column looking back at some of the strangest or most interesting one-off polls.

  • We discussed replacing the Roman numerals currently in use with Hindu-Arabic numerals.
    • Voted to keep the Roman numerals for this year as a last hurrah
      • Noted that XX is easy to read and interpet
    • Will revisit next year, with current leaning being replacement for 2027

  • We discussed the visual identity of the awards.
    • Rose mentioned the idea of putting AC Hubbub in a mad scientist outfit with a little lab jacket for vote analysis posts.
      • From this, Camwoodstock pitched a general science them, citing the many mad scientists and branches of science in Mario.
  • Reception for a general, overarching theme for Mario Awards XX was positive; vote on adopting the science theme was successful
    • Emphasize that presentations aren't required to follow it
      • Presenters are welcome to draw inspiration from it, however
    • The theme could be used in intros, outros, intermissions, Bonus Stars, supplemental art, and other "meta" aspects, kind of like a framing device.

  • We discussed the Bonus Stars.
    • Lakituthequick explained the Bonus Stars to the Awards Committee.
    • We established that a goal for this year is spreading the work of the Bonus Stars across multiple members of the committee.
      • We may adopt a template/scaffolding that AC members can fill, while still allowing them to stray outside of the template.

OPEN FLOOR
  • Everyone gets really distracted with mold jokes :immold: !
  • Pitohui brought up that TPG has pitched preliminary polls (and this year specifically, a bracket) to determine nominees, which we could use to guide discussions for individual polls. Notes the idea has merit, but brings up logistical concerns and redundancy concerns.
    • jan Misali's chart that the committee has its eyes on for analyzing M1. was brought up as a similar form of preliminary data collection.
    • Rose also mentioned a potential redundancy, especially if the polls are conducted the exact same way as the awards polls themselves. Suggestions were made to focus on alternative formats for preliminary data gathering.
    • jan Misali offered to assist with these non-standard polls to gauge potential candidates and FWD mentioned workshopping ideas with the Poll Committee.
    • It was mentioned that a bracket may be a fun side projects from which data could incidentally be gathered.
  • Overall consensus was to reserve formal preliminary data gathering for edge cases or items the AC is unsure on.
  • Post-meeting, TPG clarified that he was referring to the existing preliminary forum polls the AC uses for nominee selection. The specific suggestion is passing select polls on to the PC to gather more data from main page visitors.
    • The All-Time Favorite Character Bracket has been positively-recieved, and TPG and the Directorship will discuss the logistics further. Its results announcement will be given a slot in this year's ceremonies.

START WITH MARIO AWARDS
  • Due to a lack of time, we kept this to introducing the process of going through awards and evaluating M1 and M2.
  • Lakituthequick explained the binning process and the basics of selecting nominees.

Key:
  • Red = Remove
  • Green = Keep
  • Blue = So-so (will revisit the award in the future, may get removed/reworked)

M1. Favorite Major CharacterKeep! – We will discuss nominees next week.
M2. Favorite Supporting CharacterKeep! – We will discuss nominees next week.

April 11th, 2026 (Meeting Two)

OLD BUSINESS

  • Camwoodstock suggested sub-themes for the different ceremonies based on different fields of science
    • Idea will be discussed and reviewed more thoroughly on the forum
  • The AC noted that TPG had posted a pitch for his All-Time Favorite Character bracket and voted to support it.
  • Fun With Despair asked that any preliminary poll ideas that arise during the meeting be gathered and sent to him afterwards.
  • Awards Ceremonies are set to take place on August 14th. Mark your calendars.

CONTINUE WITH THE MARIO AWARDS

After voting to go through nominees directly after binning a given award, we began by discussing nominees for the two awards we voted to keep last week.

  • M1. Favorite Major Character
    • Add: Pauline; Kamek
      • Pauline on the strength of her Bananza role, plus many recent appearances
      • Kamek on the strength of his TSMGM role, plus consistent appearances across many forms of media

  • M2. Favorite Supporting Character
    • Updated the definition to explicitly exclude characters primarily from RPGs
    • Add: King K. Rool; Void Kong; Cranky Kong
      • King K. Rool and Void Kong on strength of their Bananza roles
      • Added Cranky Kong based on write-ins and considering his Bananza appearances
    • Remove: Kamek; Pauline; Prince Florian
      • Kamek and Pauline moved to M1
      • Prince Florian was worst-performing nominee remaining
    • Baby Waluigi and The Old Psychic Lady with the Evil Eye Who Reads Fortunes and Knows Everything Before It Happens were considered as nominees, but Cranky Kong was selected over them in a vote.
Key:
  • Red = Remove
  • Green = Keep
  • Blue = So-so (will revisit the award in the future, may get removed/reworked)

  • M3. Favorite RPG Character - Keep!
    • Add: Lady Bow; Koops
      • High-performing write-ins, with Lady Bow beating a nominee
    • Remove:Technikki, Connie
      • Poorest-performing nominees, with Technikki losing to a write-in

  • M4. Favorite Power-Up - Keep!
    • Add: Super Flower Pot; Elephant Bananza; Kong Bananza
      • New power-ups this cycle
    • Remove: Giga Bell; Master Sword (SMM2); Hammer Suit
      • First two are poorest-performing nominees
      • Hammer Suit garnered only two votes more than next-lowest nominee (Bubble Flower) and is much older

  • M5. Favorite Enemy - Remove!
    • Results are considered to be stale, with no expectations that will change.

  • M6. Favorite Music Track - Keep!
    • A vote on splitting off a "Favorite Lyrical Song" award failed.
    • Add: Steam Gardens (SMO); Breaking Through (Heart of Gold) (DKB); Kong Bananza (DKB)
      • Steam Gardens beat a nominee as a write-in
      • The two Bananza tracks are new to this cycle
    • Remove:Cheep Cheep Falls (MKWorld); Boss Theme (M&L:B); Peaches (TSMBM)
      • Worst-performing nominees, with Cheep Cheep Falls having been beaten by a write-in
    • Ludwig Showdown from Meetup in Bellabell Park was considered, but little interest was shown

  • M7. Favorite Soundtrack - Keep!
    • We will discuss nominees next week.

Looking forward at M12. Favorite Non-Bowser Boss Battle, it was suggested that Fun With Despair work with the Poll Committee to poll site visitors on the Koopaling battles in Meetup in Bellabell Park.

CONTINUE WITH THE MARIO AWARDS

Key:

  • Red = Remove
  • Green = Keep
  • Blue = So-so (will revisit the award in the future, may get removed/reworked)

M7. Favorite Soundtrack - Keep!
  • Add: Donkey Kong Bananza; The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
    • Two new releases in this cycle with well-received scores
  • Remove: The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Super Mario Wonder
    • Lowest-placing nominees

M8. Favorite Game Mechanic - Keep!
  • Add: Destructible Terrain (DKB); Bananzas (DKB)
    • Two new major and highly-marketed mechanics in a game from this cycle
  • Remove: Battle Plugs (M&L:B); Routes (MKWorld)
    • Battle Plugs was the worst-performing nominee. The Routes placed two votes higher than Badges, it is considered possible they get a boost from Meetup in Bellabell Park and is noted they are broadly well-received. Routes, on the other hand, have been markedly controversial.

M9. Favorite Super Mario Bros. Wonder Level - Remove!
  • Dominated by Piranha Plants on Parade and no longer sustained by new content or likely changes.

M10. Favorite 2D Platformer - So-So!
  • Not particularly enthused to keep it due to low expectation of a shift in results. Will revisit and consider a potential merger with 3D Platformer.

M11. Favorite Bowser Battle - Keep!
  • Leave as-is due to lack of notable new Bowser fights; revisit if Bowser appears in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book

M12 Favorite Non-Bowser Battle - Keep!
  • Add: Ruined Dragon (SMO); Robobrood (SMO)
    • Highest-placing write-ins
  • Remove: Brobot (SPM); Zokket (M&L:B)
    • Worst-performing nominees
  • Swapping Raphael the Raven (SMW2:YI) for Reclusa (M&L:B) was also considered, but rejected due to a larger difference in vote counts.
  • Considered the Koopaling fights from Meetup in Bellabell Park, but decided to wait for a preliminary poll from the PC to determine which fight is most popular
  • Post-meeting, the final boss of Donkey Kong Bananza was brought up. We will revisit the idea at the beginning of the next meeting.

M13. Favorite Mario Kart World Newcomer - Remove!
  • Dominated by Cow and has no new content.

M14. Favorite Mario Kart Item - Keep!
  • Add: Triple Mushroom
    • Best-performing write-in
  • Remove: Coin Shell
    • Automatic removal for scoring lower than two write-ins and tying with five others

M15. Favorite Mario Kart Course - Keep!
  • Add: Big Blue; Wild Woods
    • Best-performing write-ins, with the former even beating a nominee
  • Remove: Whistlestop Summit; The Great ? Block Ruins
    • Former automatically removed for performing worse than a write-in; the latter was the worst-performing remaining nominee
  • We are going to work with the PC to have a preliminary poll on Mario Kart World's new tracks, and will revisit this when we have results.

M16. Favorite Mario Party Minigame - Keep!
  • Add: Leaf Leap
    • Highest-placing write-ins
  • Adding Sneak 'n' Snore was considered, but it did not receive much support or opposition, with a majority abstaining.
  • Remove: Breakneck Building; Rocky Road; Hedge Honcho; Trace Race; Sizzling Stakes
    • Worst-performing nominees
  • Removing Shake It Up was considered, but it was kept on account of a jump in votes and notoriety
We will take the eight tied write-ins and place them in a forum poll alongside fresh nominations, then revisit this award.

M17. Favorite Non-game Media - Keep!
  • Add: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie; Rosalina's Storybook; I am a teacher: Super Mario Sweater; Super Mario Compact Disco; Super Mario (Kodansha manga)
    • The first two are new qualifying releases this cycle; the latter three are the best-performing write-ins

M18. Favorite Game (N64/GBC and older) - Remove!
  • Award removed for stale results and in favor of a potential All-Time Favorite Game award.

M19. Favorite Game (GCN/GBA through Wii/DS) - Remove!
  • Award removed for stale results and in favor of a potential All-Time Favorite Game award.

M20. Favorite Game (Wii U/3DS and newer) - So-So!
  • Potentially reworking into a Switch and Switch 2-only variant for this year.

BEGIN THE FAIL AWARDS

F1. Most Unremarkable Game - Keep!

  • Add: Mario & Luigi: Brothership
    • Second-strongest write-in and had a mediocre performance across awards in 2025. It tied with Yoshi's New Island, but YNI's reception was broadly negative.
  • Hello, Mario! and Hello, Yoshi! were considered, but not added
  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star, as the best performing write-in, was considered, but rejected out of concerns it would greatly overperform due to vocal antipathy towards the game. That is considered inconsistent with the award's intent.
