Super Mario Advance 2 (Super Mario World). My first game system was the GBA in the early 2000s and I had mostly played SpongeBob games. I decided to pick out a Mario game one day in an attempt to branch out (most likely at my mom's suggestion and the lack of new SpongeBob games), and out of the ones on the shelf Advance 2 looked the most appealing to me. I was horrendous at it at first, struggling to comprehend the power-up system or why i was dying in one hit after starting, because the previous games I had played used a health meter instead.
Later, on visitation with my dad and stepmom, there was a N64 in the house and I played Super Mario 64. I understood its health system better and was blown away by the 3D world. That was the game that truly solidified me as a Mario fan. I wasn't very good at it, the save file that was already there had the basement unlocked already but I never progressed to Bowser in the Fire Sea for years, partly because I didn't know why the blue stars weren't counting towards my total for a while but partly because i was just bad.
My first Mario RPG was The Thousand-Year Door, i had received a GameCube with a copy of that game for my birthday and it was also a slow progression that took years, but it shaped my taste in Mario games dramatically by having a fleshed out story and characters compared to what i had played before which was all gameplay.
