In Mario Kart Wii, the stats assigned to the vehicles are not arbitrary: each one of them follows a certain pattern, which consists of a set of strong, average, and weak stats. For example, some vehicles have good speed, drift, and mini-turbo, while also having bad acceleration, handling, and off-road. Others have good acceleration, handling, off-road, and mini-turbo, but bad speed and drift. We can group all thirty-six vehicles in the game into different "sets", depending on which stats they're strong, average, and weak at.
In this thread, we will classify each vehicle in the game in different sets, attending to their stats.
Counterparts
Each vehicle in the game has what's called a counterpart, which is another vehicle that has the same strong, average, and weak stats. They don't need to have the exact same stat values. These are vehicles that simply have the same strong, average, and weak stats.
A set of vehicle counterparts can also be divided into groups, which are vehicles that have the same strong, average, and weak stats as another vehicle, but don't belong in the same "group" due to them having slightly different stat values. You will see what I mean shortly.
There are three different types of counterparts:
Sets
Standard Set
First is the Standard set. This set consists vehicles in which each stat is usually in the middle of the vehicle that does worse in said stat and the one that does the best. The purpose of this set is to give a rough idea of how most vehicles in the size class feel like.
The vehicles that make up this set are the Standard Kart S, Standard Bike S, Standard Kart M, Standard Bike M, Standard Kart L, and Standard Bike L.
Handling Set
Next is the Handling set. This set consists of vehicles that have very good values on almost every stat, with handling being their main strength. However, they have low drift and very low speed, with the latter being their main weakness.
The vehicles that make up this set are the Booster Seat, Bit Bike, Daytripper, Sugarscoot, Offroader, and Wario Bike.
Drift/Mini-Turbo Set
Next is the Drift/Mini-Turbo set. consists of vehicles that have good speed, and very good drift and Mini-Turbo (their main strengths). However, they do poorly on every other stat (not counting weight), with acceleration being their main weakness. This set also has a second group that is slightly slower but does slightly better in every other stat (not counting weight).
The vehicles that make up this set are the Mini Beast, Bullet Bike, Wild Wing, Mach Bike, Flame Flyer, Flame Runner, Honeycoupe, and Shooting Star.
Off-Road Set
Next is the Off-Road set. This set consists of vehicles that have above average speed, good acceleration and handling, and excellent off-road (their main strength, with all of these being able to drift in most off-road parts). However, they have very low drift (their main weakness) and below average Mini-Turbo. This set also has a second group, which is slightly slower and has worse drift but does slightly better in every other stat (not counting weight).
The vehicles that make up this set are the Tiny Titan, Magikruiser, Super Blooper, Dolphin Dasher, Zip Zip, and Phantom.
Speed Set
Next is the Speed set. This set consists of vehicles that have excellent speed (their main strength), usually being the fastest out of all sets. However, they do very poorly everywhere else, being the weakest overall in terms of stats. Their main weaknesses are handling, off-road, and Mini-Turbo. Compared to the Drift/Mini-Turbo set, the Speed set actually accelerates faster overall.
The vehicles that make up this set are the Blue Falcon, Sprinter, Sneakster, Jetsetter, and Spear.
Acceleration Set
Next is the Acceleration set. This set consists of vehicles that have very good values on almost every stat, being the strongest overall in terms of stats.
However, compared to the Handling set, the Acceleration set has slightly better speed, better acceleration (its main strength), and significantly better drift. Inversely, it has slightly worse handling, off-road, and Mini-Turbo.
The vehicles that make up this set are the Cheep Charger, Quacker, and Classic Dragster.
Weight Set
Last but not least is the Weight set. This set consists of vehicles that have decent speed, in addition to average acceleration, handling, drift, and off-road. However, they have low Mini-Turbo.
Despite having rather unclear weaknesses and strengths, there is something these vehicles have in common that actually exceeds other vehicles of the same size class; both are the heaviest vehicles of their vehicle and size classes. The Jet Bubble is the heaviest small bike, while the Piranha Prowler is the heaviest vehicle in the game.
Compared to the Drift/Mini-Turbo set, the Weight set is slower and has worse drift and Mini-Turbo. However, it has better acceleration, handling, and off-road. Similarly, comparing it to the Speed set reveals that it is slower, but does better in every other stat, especially handling.
The vehicles that make up this set are the Jet Bubble and Piranha Prowler.

- Size class counterpart: A vehicle counterpart from a different size class.
- Kart/Bike counterpart: A bike counterpart in the same size class and group (and vice versa with bikes).
- Group counterpart: A vehicle counterpart from a different group, regardless of whether they belong in the same size class.
- Small: They do pretty well on almost every single stat, except for speed and weight.
- Medium: They have slightly better speed and weight, but do a bit worse on every other stat.
- Large: They have noticeably better speed and weight, but do significantly worse on every other stat.
