If you fall into a bottomless pit, Mario falls until he dies of... Falling, or starvation, or something, and his body just falls forever. If you are killed by an enemy or a trap or something, than you're body just lies there until someone comes around and takes your bloody rotting head to Bowser. Chances are they'll burn it.
