I guess they were going by how his sprites looked in the games at the time, which did come off as a little chubby. Nowadays though, Mario's trimmed down much more than he used to be. He still has a bit of a gut, I guess, but that's nothing compared to folks like Wario, Tubba Blubba, or this fellow here:

Heathcliff existed before Garfield.

But really apart from them being orange cats. The 2 don't really have a lot in common.

Almost without fail, every time someone tries to inject rap into something Japanese in origin, it becomes absolute cringe. Well, to be fair, this was a cartoon from a Western animation company that just happens to be about Mario. Still, better off just listening to this to get your rap fix from the Mario series:
