Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

I'm also always willing to help with story and the such if that's wanted.

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

Well, I'm open to certain ideas for quests, characters, and such. The main story I'd prefer to work on on my own, though a side-quest can go off and do almost whatever it wants :)

Been creating brand new tilesets over the past couple of weeks and finally had enough put together to be able to show off most of the town of Fora! Not quite finished yet; the doors don't go anywhere, some events are placeholders, etc. But I think this is looking good so far!

Like in the original game, Fora will be a starting town for Power Master 1 MV. In Power Master 2, it's not a starting town, but it is accessed fairly early during Kyle's story. Fora will also look slightly different in PM2, but I haven't gotten to that just yet.

Been drawing up a number of NPCs over the past couple of days. Here are some rough sketches of a few of them. From top to bottom, left to right:
The Guardians
Pam (shop owner)
Violet (innkeeper)
Young Boy
Young Girl
Teen Boy
Teen Girl
Man
Woman

I have their overworld sprites finished, but I'm still touching up on them. The faces will look better once I actually create the sprites of them :P

Finished with Jennifer's battler spritesheet! As with Stephan, her animations are grouped in sets of three and are lined, from top to bottom, left to right:

*Standard waiting
*Ready to attack
*Magic chanting
*Guarding
*Taking damage
*Enemy miss/dodge

*Thrust attack (with lances/punches)
*Slash attack (with swords/axes/whips)
*Range attack (with bows)
*Skill use
*Magic use
*Item use

*Fleeing
*Battle victory
*Near-death
*Status ailment
*Asleep
*Dead

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

Okay, so, I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before, but I am absolutely terrible with music composition.

BUT! Using a piano program called Anvil with little experience as to what I'm doing, I managed to put together some rather nice sounding jingles. Posting them here in case anyone wants to do anything with them.

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

I've been silent these past couple of days as I've been working on Hamilton's battle spritesheet. I'm not the best with proportions or poses, so if anyone has any tips, please offer them :(

Same line-up as Jennifer's three posts above.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, his archer sprite may look a little weird. Weapons are on a layer placed behind the actor, but due to Hamilton's left-handedness, I had to orientate him differently. Segments of his sprite were removed to make it appear that the bow and arrow is in front of him.

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

Finished designing the portraits of Stephan, Jennifer, and Hamilton (still working on Helen's) for PM1MV, so here's a little taste. What do you think? These are their "neutral" portraits.

Power Master 1: A Strange Journey was released a year ago today! How well do I think it's done so far? What went into developing the game? What are my plans for the future? Learn about it all in this retrospective: http://power-master.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:1628

I wanted to make my characters bigger. So I made them bigger! Currently only have this Stephan done at the moment, but dang, sometimes I amaze myself! Hopefully I can keep this up for the others :D

If anyone happens to see something off, please let me know.

I might end up making this guy my new profile pic ;D

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

And now here's Jennifer! This is going to sound awkward, but I had a great deal of difficulty getting her breasts the proper size and alignment. They were more...condensed earlier, which made her look skinnier and it threw off the size of her arms. So I had her breasts...enlarged. Yeah, no good way to say that :P Being a guy, I couldn't look at myself for the size and placement, and I didn't want to look up "anatomy of a woman" on the internet, because, well, it's the internet. Girls, let me know if those turned out right or not... She's supposed to be 15 years old, so I think I got her breast size appropriate.

...Off of that topic, I also changed her eyes. She had little dots around them before, signifying eyelashes, but that looked weird to me, so I made the ends slightly thicker instead. And the pic is slightly off center so the game places the portrait correctly within the text box, fyi.

Feedback?

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

She looks somewhat busty for a fifteen year old, but depending upon how skinny you want her, it looks fine. Plus, they fit the proportions you gave her battle sprites well.

Beyond that, all of the other features look good, although I would personally made her strands of hair in her ponytail curve all the way around, but I'm not sure how that'd look so it's good as it is.

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

Jennifer's pretty skinny, yeah. She's also very outgoing, as, canonically, she takes care of Monsters that try to enter her town, so she exercises a lot. She's a pretty fit character, now that I think about it :P

I'll mess around with her strands of hair, see what I can come up with. Thanks!

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

The proportions on your brother's Jennifer artwork are really off. Each boob is bigger than her head and gives the impression that she's only meant to be there for tits. Slim women do not have boobs like that despite what porn will tell you.

Proportions look more realistic in your upper-body image though she appears more adult than teenager (as does Stephen).

There are art resources that can guide you. If the Internet is too spooky for you to search 'art resource female body' then go to the library and get a book on it.

Finally, if you want to add more detail to your shading you should learn about 'dithering'. It's an old-school digital art trick to get around only having tiny amounts of colours to work with. Plenty of tutorials available for it.

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

My brother's art is all him, so I can't speak for him. Just like me, he is learning his way as he progresses. I realize she looks a little bit larger compared to my version, but hey, she looks good. My brother has said he'd like to redo her and Stephan at some point, so I'll offer some more guidance when that happens.

Heh, they look too old? That's a first. Usually I'm told they look too young! Just can't quite find the middle ground :P While proportions are something I definitely have trouble with, I can tell I'm getting better at them. The next character (Hamilton) should look older than these two if I do it right...

I actually DO have a book on male and female proportions. I'm just stupid and completely forget about it sometimes, thanks for reminding me!

Ah, yes, I know about dithering. I've been experimenting with it for the town tilesets. I normally use it once I see the image as finalized, though it doesn't look right on character portraits due to their large size compared to the tilesets. I'll run some more test, though.

Finished up Hamilton last night, but ran out of time to post. :P Hamilton would be considered the "tank" character of Power Master; he has a high attack and is the only character capable of wielding two weapons. He is quite tall compared to Stephan and Jennifer I posted earlier. The spikes look a little impractical, but they allow him to do a counter attack when he's wearing them in game.

Hopefully, he looks 18 here to you guys.

Yo, I tired this with my characters, but it just wasn't turning out right. Depending on the intensity of the dithering, it either didn't make a difference or made the characters look like they were colorful marble statues. I'll keep experimenting, but I don't think the characters need it that badly.

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

Double whammy!

Here's Helen. Canoncially, she appears in the desert, so she dresses lightly so as to not get overheated. (And everyone had shoulder pads when I designed them, cause 12-year-old me went "Shoulder pads are cool!" :P ) She's 18 and is slightly shorter than Hamilton. I have no idea how to shade round objects...

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

Hamilton's upper arms need to be thicker, and I'd also recommend making his chest wider to give that tank feel. The shoulder pads look great, though, and I like the detail in his hair.

For Helen, her shading on her chest makes her look like she's wearing an undershirt, which I'm not sure is intentional or not. For her breasts, give them less shading, as they look incredibly saggy with that amount of shading, which may be the feel you're going for, but she's eighteen so I don't think that's intentional. In addition to that, smoothing out her face will also make her look younger. But again, I very much like the shoulder pads.

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

Hm, I can increase the size of Hamilton's arms easily, but his chest may be more difficult with the chestplate in the way.

Helen wears some loose clothing, which I guess didn't come out right. It's supposed to be a short dress she's wearing. Helen has also always been slightly rounded compared to the others, so her face is thicker, her hips are wider, etc., which I probably should've mentioned. :P

I'll see what I can do with them and how they turn out.

How do these look? Hamilton's arms are thicker, Helen's face is slightly thinner, and her breasts are shaded differently (though I have no idea what I'm doing with those).

Also increased the image size width, as I have them placed differently in the game than I did before (more on that later), but I'm still working on that.

Re: Alex95's Power Master Thread (Help Wanted)

These look far better. :dk:

How about another area map! Fora Forest has been changed quite a lot since the original game. The Forest is more condensed, ledges have been added, the layout is slightly different, and players can see beyond the Forest into Moneo and the town of Fora. A path is also present, leading from the town to the temple. Fora Temple also appears to be slightly redesigned, having two pillars on top instead of six, holes in the walls, and a broken window.

I have yet to design any enemies, so the Forest is currently uninhabited, though there are a few treasures not shown here. Can you get a feel for how big the world will be from this image?
