NSM plays Civilization V! (interactive LP) - Part 2: More Exploring

Re: NSM plays Civilization V! (with expansions) (interactive LP) (voting begins now)

I usually don't have to buy buildings because that's all my cities ever build.

Also yeah the mountains on South America are so annoying. Why can't I move my guys from the east side of the continent to the south side without embarking on the ocean or walking all the way around?

I did like how I could build a city on Panama and move naval units through it. That was pretty cool.

Yeah, but then I never have to buy units.

I imagine this is what the conquistadors felt

Nothing is better than getting to build a city on the Suez canal
For the whole early game it's just like "Shower me with money or go around Africa, your choice"

Re: NSM plays Civilization V! (with expansions) (interactive LP) (voting begins now)

I actually don't care for the Earth map since I like things to be more unpredictable. With the Earth map, once you figure out what part of the world you're in you know where you're going.

But yeah, looks like this is what I'll be doing:

Germany
Pangaea
Science
Standard

Part 1: In the Beginning...

5B811073CAEF607E9B2F9CD6CB48C47468A32E52

And we're beginning. We're playing as Germany.

I've never played as them so we'll see what happens.

What's cool though, is that they have a chance to recruit barbarians to my side so that could come in handy.

Let's begin our journey.

43140AE04D7D111BF9C60B51DFA23A5EA611D0A3

I'd say our start is decent.

We have copper so that's something.

Also building on a coast and the river will provide additional benefits throughout the game.

33CD555FF2738174FE2DDD34B1D296EFF4B5C155

Berlin has been founded as our capitol.

I also accidentally quicksave when taking a screenshot.

C30ED83E1C3AB44A775820D150C557A374BFF27D

I am going to send out my warriors to explore past that river.

The terrain is flat so they won't be slowed down.

I can use a scout later or something if I really want to to go explore those jungle and forest tiles.

I also have to choose production, so I'm going to build a worker.

I can never decide if I want to build a monument, worker, or scout first, but I think I'll go with the worker just so I can get some early tile improvements.

18 turns is a while though, so it will give me some time to explore a bit with my warriors.

I must also choose a technology to research.

The first four available are Pottery, Animal Husbandry, Archery, and Mining.

I have copper so I'm going to research mining so I can start improving those tiles.

Mining also lets me chop forest (and there are some forest tiles near me so that will be important).

ugh, early game. There is just too many decisions :P

Anyway, I am going to end my turn now.

I move my warriors over and find some ancient ruins!

Ah, how I love ancient ruins.

The bonuses you get from them are just great.

Also there is some cotton over there and I WANT.

81FAFC18D42A11433F163992582BBB216B3C68AD

I go into the ruins an get 20 culture!

Not bad.

I'll be able to get a jump start on social policies with this.

Also I see some city-state lines over there...

Let's go meet them!

E8464576705F5BF201691FEDD65961BDAC907A2C

We meet Budapest and get some gold.

They have furs, I'll keep that in the back of my mind for later.

They're also militaristic, which I like. Easily my favorite city state type because by befriending them they'll gift you free units!

I also come across a barbarian encampment, but I'll come back once I get an archer (because right now it'd just be a stalemate).

I should be able to recruit them to my side (hopefully) which would be very nice.

We're on turn 5.

Just another five turns and we'll have mining.

More copper over here. But the exciting thing is that I now have enough culture for a social policy!

Tough decision here...

Luckily I won't have to decide because you guys will get to pick!

Please vote between Tradition, Liberty, Honor, and Piety.

Here is what they do.

Overall, Tradition is for smaller empires and provides more general cultural and production bonuses. Liberty is great for rapid expansion. Honor improves military strength in various ways, and Piety will increase my faith, which will let me adopt a religion (which will provide multiple bonuses).

Part 2 will come soon!

Re: NSM plays Civilization V! (interactive LP) - Part 1: In the Beginning...

Honor since Germany's bonus focuses on barbarians

also you should let us name the cities
that would be fun

Re: NSM plays Civilization V! (interactive LP) - Part 1: In the Beginning...

Let our honorable warriors ride gloriously into battle.

Uh, yeah. Of course.

Re: NSM plays Civilization V! (interactive LP) - Part 1: In the Beginning...

Honor is easily the most useful out of all of those.

Re: NSM plays Civilization V! (interactive LP) - Part 1: In the Beginning...

Actually I usually go with piety since I like getting the wonders pantheon
But in this case honor will do the job best

Re: NSM plays Civilization V! (interactive LP) - Part 1: In the Beginning...

Also what version of Civ V are you playing? I've only ever played vanilla.

That's funny since, out of those four, I prefer the others. (not that Honor isn't good I just don't pick it as much)

I'm playing with both G&K and BNW.

Re: NSM plays Civilization V! (interactive LP) - Part 1: In the Beginning...

Just out of interest NSM
How many hours have you logged on with Civ

80 hours. Which really isn't all that much considering how long the games take.

Re: NSM plays Civilization V! (interactive LP) - Part 1: In the Beginning...

Honor

Re: NSM plays Civilization V! (interactive LP) - Part 1: In the Beginning...

Looks like honor will win no matter what happens so looks like that's what I'm going with.

Re: NSM plays Civilization V! (interactive LP) - Part 1: In the Beginning...

So, my new Zelda civ I made is finally complete, so expect a future lp with that one :P

But anyway, the next part will come soon.

Part 2: More Exploring

Well, you guys voted, so we have chosen to choose Honor for our first social policy.

It gives us a 33% combat bonus vs barbarians, which I should be able to use effectively with my unique ability.

We also gain gold from killing enemies as well as gaining the ability to purchase Great Generals with Faith (not that I care, Great Generals suck).

228CDC65602DD3F5CB80E5A0CA67059EB6003D23

We explore more over that way and come across an ancient ruins.

Yay!

85D4BB0B9D60096BACD63F5CF3BE0DF3B57D4B37

We explore the ruins.

We get a map of some of the surrounding area, but unfortunately all that was uncovered was boring ocean tiles, so whatever.

2DFE62324CD2E25DD121E9C90315ABC50F18B40A

Berlin now has two citizens.

We keep exploring.

88251FD81E5DB8B5DDB4253D1493569F17548F80

We've finally discovered Mining!

Once we get our workers we'll be able to start copper mining.

Also we can chop forests which is always a good thing.

E23F6621CEF9A8E5266F925E53DBF482B7223F10

The next technology we will research is Pottery.

This will let us build two useful buildings - a Granary and a Shrine.

The granary will give us extra food, and the shrine will let us start producing faith so we can begin a pantheon, and ultimately a religion.

F921F42503C78B990E78E662D715B61F6D8ECB2A

So, we explored a lot over here.

There isn't really much that's all that interesting honestly.

Just some more copper, some cattle, and some deer.

All I really want is the cotten, but even so, it never hurts to have any extra of a luxury resource.

FC1C8FD37E6B23C4738CACEB9C33D7E4CC77271D

Looks like a civilization has founded a pantheon, meaning they have more faith than me (I have 0).

Their pantheon gives them +30% ranged combat strength in cities.

Also there is a city-state border over there so let's go say hi.

7768273D066816244F109FC19A361C21B510F9F5

We meet Wellington.

They give us 30 gold and are a maritime city state.

8F149BAC4F35CEAAF75A33ED6A37B998ACCE7AF6

We finally get our workers, and I move them over to start mining for the next turn.

We also have to choose a new production.

EFB5B5494D05CD0DB173E5168893B40CFFAFE462

Decision time!

Should I produce a monument or a scout?

A monument will increase my culture - thus my acquisition of social policies, and a scout will let me explore faster to the west.

monument, it pays off better in the long run because it speeds up your acquisition of new tiles for your city

also you can just buy scouts later with gold, they aren't too expensive iirc and exploring isn't imperative anyways

yeah, I have to go with monument
the more policies the better

also, looks like you've got a faith-geared civilisation around
probably the Celts judging from how they appear to have been gaining faith from the start
(though idk maybe somebody got lucky with some ruins)

Build the monument.
