I usually have 10-12 open, though I only use about 7 at a time.

I aim for 2-3, but usually end up with 4-5 when I'm actually doing work. I try to avoid not going over 7, since my computer's too tiny to have anymore open without the tabs scrolling, but it's not always possible.
