Making Images Transparent

So, here is my problem: I learned how to make images transparent (by using Magic Wand, then cutting the thing) on paint.NET, but on some images, the magic wand will also highlight important bits of the image. What do I do then?

Find a better image, or do it manually, using the Lasso.
There is no easier way than that, sorry.

Set the tolerance to 0%

Set the tolerance to 0%

That will most likely leave out hideous white fragments that will ruin the transparency, though

Perhaps your best bet is to manually erase the area which the wand tool is blending the background with the image itself.

By the way, .jpgs can't be made transparent, just so you know in future.
