I think they are still being made. I have seen a handheld version of a mega drive on sale in argos with Sonic and Knuckles on it
 
A few years back, two guys tried to make an RPG for the Atari 2600, but they stopped because it's really hard to make an RPG on the Atari.
 
This situation is like having Capcom make Megaman 9 and 10 on an NES cartridge rather than modern consoles. Rather than release it on an obsolete console, why can't the developers just release it on a modern console while still retaining an SNES-feel?
