Which games are part of the "main series"?

SMB 1, 2 (either one), 3, SMW, SM64, SMS, NSMB, SMG, NSMBW, SMG2 and SM3DL.

I personally believe that their is no main series all of the games are equal from Hotel Mario to Super Mario Bros.

I don't agree, but I would agree if you were talking about Sonic.

I personally group Sonic games into three categories: Console platformers, Handheld platformers, and Other. I.e., Sonic Unleashed would go under Console platformers, Sonic Rush Adventure would be a handheld platformer, and Sonic Riders would be "Other".

The difference here is that their are so many Mario games with such little plot development their is no way to make a main series out of it because you don't know which games are supposed to be in it
