I don't agree, but I would agree if you were talking about Sonic.
I personally group Sonic games into three categories: Console platformers, Handheld platformers, and Other. I.e., Sonic Unleashed would go under Console platformers, Sonic Rush Adventure would be a handheld platformer, and Sonic Riders would be "Other".

The difference here is that their are so many Mario games with such little plot development their is no way to make a main series out of it because you don't know which games are supposed to be in it
