Re: Luigi Action RPG [Title Pending]

That's it?
Better controls, but I kinda don't like the fact that you have to run. It's smother, kinda faster. I like it. Good Job!

It's a physics test - the main game is going to be long. I've heard the thing about the run button a lot. Maybe I'll have him stay at the run speed, or maybe I'll have the run button toggle on and off. Thanks!

Re: Luigi Action RPG [Title Pending] ~DEMO~

I like the fact that Luigi will be the main character. He has way more of a personality than Mario. It would be great to see him in a game.

Are you using Superstar Saga Luigi sprites?
Of course I am.

I just want to say this project still isn't dead. I REALLY need input on something:

nqGGz.png

Here's Toad Town so far. The south is probably going to go into docks, the north (upper) will lead to a path with a western (left-hand) split and an eastern (right-hand) split, and the eastern (right-hand) path you see will lead to a bigger platform and then the first area.

This is VERY EARLY prototype, there's no flowers or trees, and the trails aren't done. Also, the huge platform in the middle will have stairs to get up. I think the Warp Pipe from Luigi's pad will be somewhere in the southern (lower) area. I also don't know what I'm doing for empty area on top by the house.

Oh and the house that's not a Toad House will be some kind of Casino / Game Corner thing.

INPUT NEEDED. Does it look okay so far?

Re: Luigi Action RPG [Title Pending] ~DEMO~

I haven't tried it out yet, but figured I should tell you about something I noted anyway. The R button... it restarts the demo. In other words, it is a button that should be placed somewhere out of the way, where it can't be pressed by accident while you are in the middle of the game (the F keys are always a good place to put a button like that). R is kind of too close to the other action buttons.

Thanks for mentioning that. I wasn't planning to keep a restart key at all but I agree that it's a bad idea to put it there. I think I'll use F5.

Re: Luigi Action RPG [Title Pending] ~DEMO~

So by now I have tried the demo, and I must say: respect. The physics are much, much smoother than before. The handling in mid-air is much better and the risk of accidentally jumping into an enemy instead of on top of it is much less prominent now. All in all, there is no comparison to the first one. Huge improvement. As for the running: It doesn't really bother me. Having a separate running button is sort of a staple of the Mario games.

And about the map design you posted: I know it's still in an early stage, but the design right now looks a little blocky and sterile. I was thinking about a few ways to change that. You could make the elevated area more of an L-shape and put the casino thing on the lower part, for example. It would add some diversity to the map. Also, there need to be a few more details, but you said you were going to include them later, so I'll wait and see.

Here, I made a terrible sketch to show you what I mean:

I've included the Warp Pipe location sorta in the area you mentioned. Also, I added a well for no particular reason other than mindless padding. If you decide to put a well somewhere, it could have Dry Bones in it, because everybody knows zombies love wells. I'm talking too much.

Anyway, all in all, very smooth gameplay. If you now manage to construct a vivid and interesting world around it, you got yourself a very intriguing fan game. :3

Re: Luigi Action RPG [Title Pending] ~DEMO~

Thanks a lot! This is the first time I've programed an isometric (wrong term for this point of view but W/E) game completely from scratch without any help (besides input/debugging) and I have to say I'm more satisfied with these results. And with the run button, I already gave Luigi one run speed now because in the MLSS games there's no run button and it adds unneeded confusion (why wouldn't you be just running all the time?)

I was fixing Toad Town last night BEFORE I saw your post.

The water is animated during the game. I really like the L-block idea, but I think I'm going to take out the lower-left chunk instead because I have an NPC interaction requiring the Toad Houses and the Casino to be on the same level.

Thoughts on this one? I'm absolutely going to take the lower left part out - I love the idea. As for the well, that sounds like a good idea but I don't think I have graphics for it right now (although that shouldn't be too hard to pull off.)

Do you have any idea about the plot?
Yes. I don't want to give too much away but instead of Mario being kidnapped, he's on another adventure so you see him during the game (but unlike PMTTYD, you'll see him fighting sometimes)

Re: Luigi Action RPG [Title Pending] ~DEMO~

I really can't say anything for sure. I planned on having a boss duo of Wario and Waluigi, so if Waluigi is in it and the game stars Luigi, Daisy should be in it.

Ooh, looks cool! I'm on a Mac, but I'm going to try to use Wine (an application that lets me run .exes, .inks, and other windows-only things.) If it works then I'll tell you.

Re: Luigi Action RPG [Title Pending] ~DEMO~

I think it looks good. The small waterway with the bridge gives the area a nice touch, and taking out the lower-left chunk would work just as well. One thing I noticed though: That shadow inside that water gate/sewer access thingy north of the little bridge... The shadow there should probably extend a little further below to indicate a height difference between the water and the ground.

Oh yeah, I also made you a well:

Now that I look at it, I totally agree. The middle platform has a z height of 48 (3 tiles) so I guess I'll make 3 tiles of shadow underneath. If that looks weird I'll keep tweaking.

EDIT: Actually I guess I would have to account for how high the main platform is as well. It's 3 too so 6 for the shadow? (96 pixels?)

Re: Luigi Action RPG [Title Pending] ~DEMO~

Darn, it's not Wine-compatible...Something with DirectX makes it useless. It looked awesome, and I was looking forward to playing it...

Quick preview:

Started over again, but I already have reprogrammed in most of what I had before just... done a lot better. There were a lot of glitches with Z collisions that nobody mentioned to me but it runs fine now. I'll still use Pipe Buttons and Mario's House and stuff, and I'm still going to have the design for Toad Town with the wishing-well that Edo sprited.

If I restart one more time, you guys have permission to slap me.

Really guys, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I keep starting over again before I get anything done in the game. http://www.box.net/shared/neav8n6xqziexmmpb4r0

(click to download)

I think I'm satisfied with this one so far. Controls and stuff are explained in-game. Just make sure you extract from the ZIP it before running it or you'll get an error.

No enemies yet, no hammer yet (I've done the hammer before so I'll add it again.)

Just walk around and test things if you want. All the surfaces in Toad Town should work fine. No NPCs yet either.

A while ago, I got a particularly dumb comment on another forum about how a game I posted was boring and wasn't a game.

It's just another engine test, so if you're expecting a game, go somewhere else.

And Edo I'm still going to use the Wishing Well you made. =P

You guys may notice that some old things are there again, like the pipe button. Hopefully it looks smoother/faster than it did the first time.
